About Us
The Salt Depot operates a diverse fleet of heavy equipment, trucks, and trailers supporting municipal and commercial operations year-round. We take pride in maintaining our fleet to the highest safety and performance standards and are looking for a skilled Apprentice Mechanic to join our growing maintenance team.
Position Overview
The Apprentice Mechanic will assist in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy trucks, trailers, loaders, and other mobile equipment. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in mechanical repair, a solid understanding of diesel systems, and a strong work ethic.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform inspections, maintenance, and repairs on heavy trucks, trailers, loaders, and other fleet equipment.
- Assist licensed technicians with diagnostics, component replacements, and major repair work.
- Conduct preventive maintenance (PM) services, including oil changes, filter replacements, brake adjustments, and lubrication.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and air brake systems under supervision.
- Complete work orders accurately, including parts usage and labor hours.
- Follow all MTO, safety, and environmental compliance procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized workspace and ensure safe shop practices at all times.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on mechanical experience in truck, trailer, or heavy equipment repair (formal apprenticeship an asset).
- Must possess own set of tools suitable for heavy-duty and automotive work.
- Valid Ontario G-Class driver's license (DZ or higher considered an asset).
- Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Ability to read service manuals, wiring diagrams, and perform accurate diagnostics.
- Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs and working in a busy shop environment.
- Team-oriented attitude with strong communication and reliability.
Compensation & Benefits
