Job Description

The Managing Director, Relationship Management (Banks) sets the enterprise strategy for CPP Investments' engagement with global banking partners and ensures the Fund presents a unified, credible institutional posture. The role maximizes value creation—across balance sheet access, co-investment, idea flow, and execution quality—in support of the Fund's long-term mandate.

Positioned within Total Fund Management (TFM), this role operates with a One Fund, enterprise-first perspective. By combining deep banking and capital markets expertise with cross-Fund coordination, the Managing Director enhances partner alignment, enables informed enterprise trade-offs, and institutionalizes best practices in relationship management.

Total Fund Management (TFM) provides enterprise visibility, coordination, and insight to optimize total-Fund outcomes.

The Relationship Management (Banks) function works closely with Investment Departments and corporate functions to maintain an embedded ownership model while aligning on enterprise priorities, consistent messaging, and escalation pathways.

The team leads external engagement with senior leaders at top-tier global banks and builds data-driven frameworks, playbooks, and tools that strengthen CPP Investments' institutional posture and partner experience.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Set enterprise banking relationship strategy – Define priorities and principles across fees, balance sheet access, co-investment, execution quality, and thought leadership. Represent CPP Investments with senior external stakeholders to position the Fund as a trusted, long-term partner.
  • Maintain ownership model and coordination – Clarify relationship ownership, executive sponsorship, and points of contact. Align Investment Departments on enterprise priorities and consistent messaging, while operating escalation frameworks that resolve conflicts and support shared decision-making.
  • Lead external posture and partner experience – Design and drive adoption of a relationship playbook that ensures consistency, transparency, and credibility across banks and geographies. Act as a senior external representative engaging at the highest levels of partner leadership.
  • Facilitate enterprise trade-offs – Orchestrate alignment among Investment Departments, Group Heads, and Senior Managing Directors on access to scarce partner resources. Provide enterprise-level guidance where departmental objectives intersect.
  • Build team and governance – Recruit, develop, and lead a small, high-impact RM team. Role-model One Fund leadership and strengthen capability through frameworks, data, and decision-enablement tools that support long-term decision making.
  • Measure and report value – Define and track an enterprise banking value framework (payment and non-payment indicators) to drive continuous improvement in coordination, responsiveness, and external recognition.
Qualifications
  • Deep understanding of institutional investing and the role of global banks across public and private markets, with credibility engaging across asset classes and organizational levels.
  • Proven expertise in relationship management, enterprise strategy execution, and complex stakeholder coordination in matrixed environments; strong influence leadership.
  • Demonstrated success leading high-performing teams and developing talent, with the ability to lead through influence and authority of role rather than span of control.
  • Exceptional judgment, pattern recognition, and problem-solving skills under ambiguity, including reconciling differing departmental strategies and timelines.
  • Superior executive communication skills, with the ability to craft and deliver clear, enterprise-first narratives to senior internal and external audiences across cultures and geographies.
  • Undergraduate degree required; MBA, CFA, or similar advanced credential preferred.
  • Minimum 15+ years of relevant experience in investment, capital markets, strategy, and/or relationship management.
