Purpose
The purpose of the
Indigenous and International Languages Instructor (IILE)
is to provide learners an opportunity to develop the ability to listen, speak, read and write in a new language, other than French or English, or to maintain the language of their home or heritage and to facilitate and promote cultural understanding.

Main Responsibilities

  • Instruct class according to daily lesson plan using appropriate and relevant resources and methods of delivery, in accordance with the Curriculum Guidelines and principles of cooperative learning
  • Provide instruction that is consistent and coordinated with KPRDSB's instructional program so as to ensure that students meet and exceed learning targets.
  • Adapt curriculum to provide individual, small group, and/or remedial instruction as to meet the needs of individual learners;
  • Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement;
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans that utilize a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies.
  • Develop goal-based short and long-term plans that reflect the IILE Curriculum Guidelines and are appropriate to the needs, interests and learning styles of the learners.
  • Develop and plan daily activities to reflect the short and long-term goals.
  • Develop learners' knowledge and skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in the target language inclusive of cultural components.
  • Report, record and maintain accurate and up-to-date attendance registers.
  • Conduct regular learner assessments and evaluations in order to determine learners' progress.
  • Encourage clients to become autonomous, active, and self-aware language learners, engaged in and responsible for their learning.
  • Provide a supporting and safe learning environment that encourages learner responsibility and incorporates challenging instructional strategies;
  • Provide a safe, nurturing, bias-free, positive and respectful learning environment that recognizes individual differences.
  • Accommodate diverse backgrounds and cultural and religious needs of learners.
  • Collaborate and be part of effective planning by sharing best practices with colleagues.
  • Assist in registration process.
  • Initiate outreach and communication with the community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position does not supervise.

Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary degree/certificate (preferably related to education and/or adult education)
  • One (1) to three (1) years recent experience teaching learners in Spanish
  • Ontario Teaching Certification is an asset.
  • Teaching experience from other countries is an asset.

Specialized Skills

  • Ability to speak, read and write fluently in English and the language of instruction.
  • Knowledge of the culture of the target language.
  • Proven familiarity with language teaching methodologies.
  • Strong pedagogical skills.
  • Ability to manage lessons with classes consisting of learners of several ages and abilities.
  • Proven ability and demonstrated willingness to work in a multi-cultural, multi-racial environment.
  • Advanced level of experience using Google Suite, Microsoft Office including Excel and Word.
  • Excellent interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
  • A commitment to service excellence.
  • Valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle.

  • Moderate amounts of physical, mental or virtual exertions, some dealing with difficult people
  • Moderate amounts of lifting less than 5 kg.
  • Moderate minor distractions, moderate pressure to meet deadlines, moderate travel
