About Us

The John M. Thompson Centre for Engineering Leadership and Innovation (CELI) is one of six academic units in the Faculty of Engineering. The John M. Thompson Centre for Engineering Leadership and Innovation focuses on the development of non-technical skills in the Engineering community. It actively partners with other campus groups in developing skills that can be used with Engineers, such as design thinking and entrepreneurship training.

Responsibilities

The ES 1050 Electronics and Electrical Support will be responsible for supporting students in their ES1050 labs, with designing and implementing simple electronics into their designs as necessary. The technician would help students and instructors identify potential safety concerns in designs before they are prototyped, promote electrical safety practices during implementation, as well as provide practical prototyping guidance to teams, and assist in reviewing student electrical/electronics purchase requests.

Accountabilities will include:

  • Maintain a safe working and prototyping environment.
  • Ensure a safe electrical/electronics working and prototyping environment.
  • Aid instructors and students in reviewing designs for safety, and suggesting ways to improve the manufacturability or performance outcomes.
  • Aid students to effectively and efficiently realise (build themselves) prototypes of their designs.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Community College Diploma OR Undergraduate Degree in a related field (electronic/electrical technology or engineering)

Experience:

  • 1 year of work experience supporting research in a related technical field. Experience in electrical/electronics prototyping.

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

  • Familiarity with experimental design and analysis
  • Relevant safety training
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability to follow processes with high attention to detail
  • Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
  • Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
  • Ability to collect and analyze data in an objective manner
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve issues
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
