Position Summary
The Building Operations Worker plays an essential role in maintaining the safety, cleanliness, and overall condition of Katzie First Nation's housing sites. This position is responsible for both maintenance and janitorial duties, ensuring that all buildings are clean, well-maintained, and operating efficiently.
Working as part of a collaborative housing team, the Building Operations Worker supports a positive environment for tenants, visitors, and staff while reflecting Katzie First Nation's values of respect, accountability, and care for community spaces.
Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance
Complete daily building walk-throughs and visual inspections of all mechanical and common areas.
Perform small to moderate repairs, including lighting, door hardware, drywall patching, and painting.
Conduct minor plumbing repairs (unclog drains, replace washers, tighten fittings).
Replace filters and assist with regular maintenance of HVAC and ventilation systems.
Report and document all maintenance issues using the Maintenance Request process.
Support preventative maintenance tasks (daily/weekly/monthly) as outlined in the Operations Manual.
Work closely with the Katzie First Nation Maintenance Department for in-house repairs.
Assist external trades and contractors (plumbing, electrical, mechanical, elevator, pest control) when on site.
Maintain tools, supplies, and equipment in safe working condition.
Support seasonal upkeep, including snow removal, lawn care, and minor exterior repairs.
Janitorial and Cleaning
Perform daily cleaning of common areas including entrances, hallways, elevators, laundry rooms, washrooms, and dining areas.
Sweep, mop, and disinfect floors and high-touch surfaces.
Clean windows, doors, and shared surfaces regularly.
Empty and sanitize garbage and recycling bins.
Maintain exterior walkways and ensure access routes are free of debris or hazards.
Follow the established cleaning schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal).
Use cleaning supplies and chemicals safely in accordance with MSDS guidelines.
Replenish janitorial supplies and maintain organized storage areas.
Support periodic deep cleaning, carpet shampooing, and floor waxing as required.
Safety and Reporting
Report any hazards, damage, or safety concerns immediately to the Senior Program Manager.
Participate in fire drills, safety checks, and inspections.
Assist in maintaining fire extinguishers, exit signage, and lighting.
Ensure all work complies with Occupational Health and Safety and WHMIS standards.
Maintain accurate maintenance and cleaning logs.
Participate in regular supervision and team meetings to discuss site operations.
Community and Teamwork
Treat tenants, visitors, and colleagues with respect and professionalism.
Support the Society's goal of providing safe, clean, and culturally respectful housing for community members.
Demonstrate reliability, confidentiality, and good communication in all interactions.
Uphold Katzie First Nation's commitment to community care and responsibility for shared spaces.
Qualifications and Experience
Required:
Minimum 2 years' experience in building maintenance, janitorial, or facility operations.
Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and painting repairs.
Ability to safely use tools, cleaning equipment, and maintenance supplies.
Understanding of cleaning standards and sanitation practices.
Physically capable of performing manual work and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Strong communication and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Willingness to work flexible hours and respond to occasional after-hours calls.
Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and reliable transportation.
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
Preferred:
Previous experience working in Indigenous or non-profit housing environments.
WHMIS, Occupational First Aid, or Building Service Worker certification.
Familiarity with Katzie First Nation community, territory, and cultural values.
Working Conditions
On-site work across multiple Katzie First Nation housing locations.
Exposure to cleaning products, tools, and equipment (with PPE provided).
Occasional outdoor work and lifting required.
Regular supervision and support from the Senior Program Manager.
Compensation
$30.00 per hour
