Role Description
Establishment of the AXIS Business Technology Solutions Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia is a key part of our company's transformation journey. The Center will operate across the AXIS IT organization providing key strategic technology and support. While enhancing current IT capabilities AXIS is also actively establishing a pipeline of talent by recruiting a select number of the highest performing students with offers of full-time employment upon graduation.
Co-op students function as embedded team members and directly contribute to ongoing projects and emerging digital initiatives. These projects may include efforts to improve routine business processes, develop standardized reporting tools, create new digital platforms, engineer databases and data pipelines, integrate cloud technology and applications, build microservices and apps, develop web sites with full-stack tools, redesign back-end legacy systems, create dashboards and analytic reports, manage networking and infrastructure, research new innovative technologies, and support other ongoing IT initiatives.
Responsibilities
Co-op students are matched directly with IT teams at the AXIS Business Technology Solutions Center for project-based roles and experiences. Student roles may include positions in:
- Data Management and Data Engineering – Sift through SQL databases to gather and maintain information, validate data, consolidate and aggregate data, data analysis;
- Database Administration – Maintain and support SQL database environments;
- ETL Development – Extract and manipulate data from data warehouses, integrate into business processes, develop data pipelines, integrate disparate data sources, data design and profiling, optimize data workflows;
- Process Automation – Work with business units to understand insurance and reinsurance workflows, develop new tools and technologies to improve efficiencies, upgrade old processes, design new ways of working;
- Machine Learning Engineering – Support data science and data analytics efforts to develop new insights from data, apply statistical methods to data, write ML algorithms, build ML models;
- Software and Application Development – Work with software engineers to develop new applications, migrate apps to cloud, rebuild legacy apps, maintain and update current applications;
- DevOps Engineering – Use CI/CD tools and methods to support our production and release cycles;
- Test Automation – Follow Scrum or Agile frameworks to support testing strategy, analyze and review acceptance criteria, develop test suites, design test cases, perform manual testing, defect analysis and root cause investigations;
- Security – Review and harden OS and network configuration, analyze security events using security detection methods, design and build reporting tools;
- UI/UX – Design and implement functionality in web CMS, support design considerations for company applications and tools, address user issues and requests;
- Web Development – Front-end development, responsive web design, back-end development, full-stack;
Qualifications
We do not expect you to be an expert in IT or in the insurance industry. Your technical ability with IT is a consideration for your placement and will qualify you for a variety of projects, but it is more important to us that you come with a willingness to learn and a pro-active attitude
We are recruiting from a variety of academic disciplines including, but not limited to: Actuarial Sciences, Math & Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy & Physics, Business & Finance, Geography & Environmental Sciences, Psychology.
- Currently enrolled in a recognized post-secondary program;
- Eligible for a Co-op work term;
- Experience with computational methods and technologies;
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to break down complex problems and provide solutions;
