Job Overview

The Lead Hand – Construction Services plays a key role in daily field operations.

This position supports the site foreman and operations team by coordinating small crews, running equipment, and ensuring grades, compaction, and quality control meet project requirements.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, can read civil drawings or grade stakes, operate a laser, and has a strong understanding of excavation, backfill, finish grading, and light landscaping.

Key Responsibilities

  • Site Leadership & Coordination
  • Lead small crews in excavation, backfill, grading, and light landscaping tasks.

Grade, Laser, & Finish Work

  • Set up and operate single and dual-slope laser levels.
  • Check elevations and grade tolerances for trenching, slab prep, and finish grades.
  • Perform finish grading and final shaping for driveways, boulevards, or landscaped areas.
  • Read and interpret site drawings, benchmarks, and grade stakes.
  • Confirm finished grades meet engineering and aesthetic specifications before completion.

Equipment Operation & Labour

  • Operate skid steers, compactors, and small excavation equipment as required.
  • Perform light hand excavation, shovelling, and grade finishing when necessary.
  • Direct trucks for loading/unloading and monitor material movement.
  • Assist in light landscaping activities including topsoil placement, raking, and site restoration.

Compaction & Quality Control

  • Conduct compaction testing (with onsite or third-party equipment).
  • Ensure lifts and layers are compacted to specified densities and moisture conditions.
  • Track and record quantities of materials moved, imported, or exported.

Safety & Documentation

  • Lead by example with safe work habits and proper PPE use.
  • Participate in daily toolbox meetings and hazard assessments (FLHAs).
  • Report incidents, near misses, and equipment issues promptly.
  • Maintain proper documentation for job closeout and daily logs.
  • Work closely with operators and labourers to ensure daily production targets are met.
  • Communicate site needs, progress, and challenges to the Operations Coordinator.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in excavation, grading, or civil construction.
  • Proficient in laser setup and grade checking (Topcon, Spectra, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of finish grading, backfill lifts, trenching, and compaction requirements.
  • Ability to read civil drawings, grades, and benchmarks.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with reliable transportation.
  • CSTS 2020, WHMIS, and First Aid (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred:

  • Experience operating skid steers, mini excavators, and compaction equipment.
  • Knowledge of City of Calgary DSSP or similar infrastructure standards.
  • Small crew leadership or foreman experience.
  • TDG or Ground Disturbance certification considered an asset.
  • Exposure to landscape restoration, topsoil placement, and final site clean-up.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Wage Range: $32.00 – $40.00/hour depending on experience and skill level.
  • Overtime after 8 hours/day or 44 hours/week.
  • Paid safety training and certifications.
  • Growth opportunity into Foreman or Supervisor roles.
  • Year-round work with seasonal variation (construction and snow operations).

Pay: $32.00-$45.00 per hour
