Role Description
Neptune Theatre is searching for an experienced and knowledgeable Technical Director. This role will be responsible for the technical implementation of all Neptune's productions, presentations, classes, activities, and rentals. Reporting to the Production Manager (PM), the Technical Director will work as an integral part of the creative process, collaborating with designers and staff to ensure Neptune's production values and safety are met.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises a unionized team that includes a seasonal Assistant Technical Director, Department Heads, Assistants, and casual technical staff as needed.
- Assume the lead technical responsibility for all Neptune Productions, Co-Productions, and Presentations, as well as oversee technical elements in activities happening at Neptune Theatre's Venues.
- Work in conjunction with the PM to create schedules; manage budgets, including IATSE labour, materials, and equipment.
- Establish both material and labour costing for all production elements; technical and scenic.
- Communicates with designers to realize production's designs while keeping within budgetary constraints.
- Produces all construction drawings and other production paperwork.
- Manages budgets for all scenic areas in consultation with the Production Manager
- Ensure all production elements are delivered on schedule and on budget; and reports to the PM as to the status of production budgets at weekly meetings.
- Engages crew in accordance with the provided IATSE roster.
- Manages the installation of all technical and scenic elements in the theatres.
- Assist the Neptune Theatre School classes and performances with technical requirements for their activities.
- Oversee the technical requirements of internal events and rental clients.
- Manages the build process in the carpentry, paint and prop shops, including scheduling, timely supply of required materials, and safe operations consistent with health and safety policies.
- Develop strategies for how Neptune productions can improve in processes and procedures.
- Working with the Executive Director and Building Manager to contribute to the ongoing conversation about capital maintenance and development of theatre spaces, with a particular focus on equipment replacements and upgrades.
- Committed to creating a safe and equitable space for all artists and employees.
Qualifications
- 5 Years' experience as a Technical Director in theatre or live events
- Professional experience managing Union Employees
- High Proficiency in Vectorworks
- Advanced knowledge of theatrical construction techniques and materials
- Awareness of safe and efficient theatrical labour standards
- Theatrical rigging knowledge
- Understanding of typical schedules and timelines for mounting a theatrical production
- Advanced knowledge of theatrical lighting, sound, and projection
- Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with multiple deadlines
- Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
- Excellent time management, organizational and administrative skills
- Skilled in problem-solving and able to adapt quickly
- Exhibits a positive and collaborative attitude, fostering teamwork and cooperation.
- Flexible schedule that allows availability to work some evenings and weekends
Salary
This position offers an annual salary of $50,000 - $60,000, including vacation and health plan benefits.
