Job Overview

The Motor Control Engineer is responsible for the design of motor control algorithms, implementation of software on motor controllers, and performing lab testing to verify product and customer objectives are met by their development work.

Electric machine types worked on include but are not limited to PMAC, Induction, and SynRM. This role involves using dynamic simulation tools for high performance motor controls algorithm research, while iterating results on real hardware to delight and satisfy customer expectations.

This position will work closely with a cross-functional team, providing support to applications, validation, and hardware discipline team members, ensuring compliance with safety standards and company procedures.

This position reports to the Director, Software & Control Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

In this role the Motor Control Engineer will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Control Algorithm Design, Development, and Testing:
    • Motor control algorithm implementation in MATLAB/Simulink environment
    • Simulation testing of motor control algorithms, inverter hardware, and motors.
    • Integration of software into a real-time embedded system in C/C++
  • Motor Characterization and Calibration:
    • Use and improve techniques for the generation of optimal algorithmic parameters based on motor FEA design data.
    • Motor characterization, and inverter-motor pairing performed on a dynamometer. Development of manual and automated processes to support these activities.
    • Calibrate algorithm parameters and system level response of Turntide inverters to meet product and customer application requirements.
  • Support and Specification:
    • Produce user guides and application notes to be consumed by all levels of the business, and externally.
    • Provide technical support to applications, validation, and sales for active customer engagements.
    • Review system requirements and specify design and test requirements for all development work performed.

The Requirements

  • A degree or equivalent: BASc/BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
  • 3-5+ years of industry experience developing and testing motor control solutions.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink modeling, simulation, and embedded code generation and integration for various motor systems.
  • Experience with laboratory test equipment, dynamometers, and motor performance testing equipment and techniques.
  • Experience and proficiency in development of real-time embedded software (C/C++) as well as strong problem-solving ability for debugging on real-time embedded systems.
  • Ability and commitment for regular on-site presence, as work responsibilities largely involve usage of lab facilities located in Waterloo, CAN.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within North America, the UK and abroad for business needs and team collaboration opportunities.
  • Flexible approach to work, recognizing changes in the emphasis of duties.

Bonus Points

  • An advanced degree in Power Electronics or Motor Control Engineering (MASc/MEng).
  • Active use and knowledge of automation techniques using software languages like Python, to improve repeatability of testing procedures and data capture.
  • Experience working on projects with high levels of Safety and Security compliance to specifications like ISO26262 and ISO21434
