Job Description

The Risk Prevention Department is dedicated to managing legal, financial, and reputational risks associated with uncleared and abandoned cargo.

Our mission is to ensure fluid and safe containers flow, safeguard MSC's interests by reducing financial exposure and operational risks, uphold customer satisfaction, and guarantee full completion of the MSC Contract of Carriage.

This position is vital to the Risk Prevention team, is responsible for managing cargo that remains uncleared or has been abandoned through the course of maritime transportation.

This dynamic role ensures compliance with international regulations, protects company interests, mitigates financial risk, and maintains customer satisfaction by expertly handling complex cargo situations.

Level of Responsibility

Enhanced task complexity and accountability to customer. Enhanced autonomy in role, contributing significantly to team/organizational projects. Accountable for accuracy and efficiency in assigned tasks. Starting to mentor junior staff.

Key Tasks

  • Cargo Monitoring and Identification: Consistently track and identify shipments at risk of becoming uncleared or abandoned across global ports. Collaborate with port authorities, customs agents, freight forwarders, Shippers and Consignees as well as internal teams to maintain accurate records and flag any discrepancies or delays in cargo clearance.
  • Resolution and Recovery: Develop and execute strategies for recovering, disposing of, or re-routing uncleared and abandoned cargo. Determine and coordinate appropriate measures based on local regulations and company policies.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of international maritime laws, import/export regulations, and port-specific customs procedures. Ensure all cargo handling activities are fully compliant to minimize legal exposure for the carrier and its clients.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, port authorities, customs officials, and other stakeholders regarding uncleared and abandoned cargo. Communicate status updates, resolution timelines, and recovery options with clarity and professionalism.
  • Financial Impact Mitigation: Analyze potential costs, risks, and liabilities associated with uncleared and abandoned cargo. Negotiate with service providers, clients, and insurers to minimize losses and maximize recovery of value. Maintain financial records, documentation and communication for internal reviews.
  • Process Improvement: Identify root causes of cargo abandonment or clearance delays. Work with cross-functional teams to develop and implement process improvements, training programs, and technological solutions to reduce recurrence.
  • Customer Service: Manage sensitive customer interactions related to unclear and abandoned cargo, resolve concerns and maintain positive relationships. Offer guidance regarding cargo release, alternative solutions, or claims processes.
  • Legal Liaison: Collaborate with marine attorneys on disputed cases and costs recovery, representing the carrier's interests in negotiations, settlements, or litigation as required.

  • Intermediate proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office
  • 2-3 years of experience and knowledge of Transportation industry, warehousing and cargo logistics.
  • University degree in a related field.
  • Bilingual in French and English.
