Program Overview – Family Settlement Services
This position supports newcomers to successfully adjust to their new lives in Canada. The Newcomer Health Promotion Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering health promotion initiatives that support the physical and social well-being of newcomers and refugees. Working within a holistic settlement framework, the Coordinator will facilitate culturally responsive programming that reduces barriers to health and health promotion, promotes resilience, and enhances newcomers' ability to integrate and thrive in Canada.
What You Will Do
- Design, implement, and facilitate Health Promotion programs and workshops (e.g., stress management, healthy lifestyles, mindfulness, coping with migration trauma, community recreation).
- Deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate services in group and one-on-one settings.
- Collaborate with community health providers, mental health professionals, and recreation services to ensure wraparound supports.
- Provide newcomers with Health Promotion assessments, referrals, and navigation support to health and settlement services.
- Support clients in building social connections, reducing isolation, and accessing community resources.
- Use a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and client-centric approach.
- Develop partnerships with local health, recreation, and community organizations.
- Liaise with ethno-cultural groups to adapt Health Promotion initiatives to community needs.
- Promote Health Promotion programs through outreach in newcomer communities.
- Track participation, outcomes, and client feedback for program evaluation.
- Prepare reports and maintain accurate records in compliance with program requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying gaps and emerging needs.
- Attend community meetings, activities and events, and professionally promote WoodGreen.
- Engages in training and education to upgrade skills as directed by WoodGreen Community Services to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
- Maintains all aspects of confidentiality relating to community partners, community members and clients.
- Ensure the anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved within the program.
- Is responsible for representing the unit on internal staff committees as directly by the Director and the Manager of Family Settlement Services.
- Participates in regular supervisory sessions with the Manager of Family Settlement Services.
- Participate in regular staff, unit and other meetings.
- Perform other related duties as required from time to time.
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in Social Work, Public Health, Psychology, Recreation Therapy, Community Development, Social Services, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in community programming, settlement services, or health promotion (experience with immigrants and refugees preferred).
- Experience facilitating workshops and group activities, both in-person and online.
- Strong understanding of newcomer health and settlement challenges.
- Ability to work from various WoodGreen locations or community partner locations in an indoor and outdoor setting
- Knowledge of mental health, Health Promotion, and trauma-informed practices.
- Excellent facilitation, communication, and cross-cultural skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and community partners.
- Strong organizational and program coordination abilities.
- Proficiency in MS Office, virtual platforms (Zoom, Teams), and client data systems.
- Fluency in English required; additional languages commonly spoken by newcomers (e.g., Arabic, Dari, Mandarin, Spanish, Somali, Ukrainian, etc.) an asset.
