Postdoctoral Fellow, Plant Sciences
Primary Purpose: Establishing, generating and measuring data for understanding root systems for plant breeding programs in several screening systems. They will have proven experience both in the lab (root phenotyping systems) and computational tasks (genomics).
Nature of Work: The successful candidate will pursue research related to root system functionality and its role in plant breeding systems primarily using phenomics and genomics. They will collaborate with and report to Dr. Ana Vargas, Principal Lentil and Faba Bean Breeder at the University of Saskatchewan. The work will be carried out through the Department of Plant Sciences/Crop Development Centre in Saskatoon, SK.
Accountabilities: The PDF will be responsible for all aspects of research and will work closely with the leadership team. Responsibilities will include experiment establishment and monitoring; sample collection, processing and analysis; data management and statistical analyses; writing manuscripts and reports; presenting regular progress reports and research updates. The candidate will meet regularly with the research team leadership.
Education: Applicants are expected to hold a PhD in a related field (within the last 5 years). Previous experience in root phenotyping systems and experiments is desired.
Experience: The ideal candidate has a good knowledge of plant root systems, methods for phenotyping root systems, and plant genetic analyses (quantitative and qualitative). They must also have experience working with large datasets and producing high-quality data visualizations and linking agronomic and genetic factors. Experience in Python/R would be a definite asset. The applicant must have strong writing skills and a record of publication.
Skills: Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills are required. The applicant must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills, with an aptitude for teamwork and collaboration within a multidisciplinary research team. Eligible to obtain a Saskatchewan driver's license.
