Assistant Deputy Chief

Reporting to the Deputy Chief, The Assistant Deputy Chief (ADC) -Training, Hazmat, and Logistics is responsible for managing and administering all aspects of training, hazardous materials coordination, and logistics for the Fredericton Fire Department. This role ensures operational readiness, oversees training programs, manage equipment and facility logistics, and supports incident operations.
Qualifications Required
- Knowledge of Federal, and provincial acts, municipal by-laws, standards and codes relevant to fire protection.
- Hazardous Materials Technician ,NFPA 1072 or 472 IFSAC or equivalent required
- NFPA 1041 and NFPA 1021 certifications are considered assets.
- Diploma in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or Public Administration is considered an asset.
Knowledge of:
- Fire and emergency service trends and developments.
- Training techniques, aids, and software.
- Departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Budget preparation and monitoring.
- Organizational structure and management philosophy.
- Community and business partnership opportunities.

- Plan, organize, and instruct training programs.
- Supervise and motivate staff effectively.
- Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
- Establish strong working relationships across departments and agencies.

What You'll Do:
Training Division Management
- Develop and implement training policies and procedures.
- Deliver and evaluate standardized and specialized training programs.
- Coordinate orientation and probationary programs for new recruits.
- Assist with promotional processes and cadet placements.
- Oversee training plans aligned with municipal growth strategies.
- Supervise training staff and on-shift instructors.
- Act as a resource and participate in promotional teams.
Hazardous Materials Coordination
- Ensure readiness of the Hazmat Provincial Response Team (HPRT).
- Facilitate quarterly and contractual HPRT training events.
- Respond to Hazmat emergencies as a Scout Team Member.
- Coordinate CBNRE activities with RCMP and other agencies.
- Manage Hazmat inventory, maintenance, and provincial invoicing.
- Represent FFD at provincial Hazmat meetings and exercises.
Logistics and Equipment Oversight (in coordination with ADC of Operations)
- Manage inventory and maintenance of operational equipment.
- Oversee ordering. pricing, and distribution of equipment
- Maintain training facility operations including tower, classroom. and drafting pond.
- Coordinate seasonal deployments of operations equipment
- Supervise maintenance schedules for apparatus. hoses, ladders, and rescue equipment.
Operational Support (in coordination with ADC of Operations)
- Provide logistical and operational support during incidents.
- Offer recommendations for operational improvements.
- Attend meetings and represent ADC of Operations when required.
- Assist Platoon Captains and act as Senior Officer at emergency incidents.
