Job Summary
The child care centre cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals and snacks while maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment. Key duties include menu planning, grocery ordering, managing inventory, and ensuring all food preparation complies with health and safety regulations, such as those regarding allergies and dietary restrictions. The cook also works with other staff to ensure meals are delivered on time and may interact with children to promote good food habits.
Key responsibilities
- Meal planning and preparation:
- Plan and prepare daily or weekly menus for breakfast, lunch, and snacks, often following guidelines like the Canada Food Guide.
- Adapt meals for children of different age groups and developmental levels.
- Prepare meals according to specific dietary needs, allergies, and restrictions (e.g., peanut-free).
- Ensure food is prepared and presented in an appealing way.
- Kitchen management and safety:
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen, including all appliances, storage areas, and equipment.
- Ensure all food is stored correctly and that temperatures are monitored and logged.
- Comply with all local health and sanitation standards and assist the health inspector when required.
- Perform regular cleaning and dish washing after each meal.
- Inventory and purchasing:
- Conduct regular inventory of kitchen supplies and equipment.
- Create grocery lists and place orders for food and supplies.
- Manage food and supply budgets.
- Collaboration and communication:
- Work with centre staff to get accurate meal counts and coordinate meal delivery times.
- Communicate with parents to discuss their child's dietary needs and answer questions.
- Maintain required documentation, such as production reports or receipts.
- Other duties:
- May be asked to prepare special meals for field trips.
- May assist with general cleaning duties in and around the centre.
- May model appropriate eating and hygiene behaviors for children.
Qualifications
- Prior experience in dietary services, food preparation, or a related culinary environment is preferred
- Strong knowledge of food safety standards and proper handling techniques
- Experience in menu planning and meal assembly within a group setting such as healthcare, education or hospitality setting is a plus
- Demonstrated skills in cooking, food service, and kitchen operations
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
- Exceptional communication skills and a friendly attitude toward educators, children and families
