RESIDENT CARE AIDE

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Project Operations Manager, the Resident Care Aide (RCA) provides personal care and assistance with activities of daily living to clients.

RCAs work closely with and support clients who have complex mental and physical health challenges. This position assists in meeting the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of clients to facilitate their independence.

Resident Care Aides are responsible for providing medication administration, harm reduction, basic wound care and first aid, safety and security measures, crisis intervention and de-escalation of heightened situations. This position works in collaboration with other staff on the team and acts as a first responder in medical interventions including overdose response, medical emergencies, and instances of death.

We are hiring for two permanent, regular part-time RCA's

KEY RESPONSBILITIES

This job includes, but is not limited to, the following:

· Listens and responds to resident concerns, questions and requests in a manner that conveys respect. Establishes and maintains a strong rapport with clients.

· Provides residents with nursing assistant care such as catheter care, enemas, suppositories, taking vital signs, applying non-sterile dressings and topical medications, diabetic urine and blood testing, obtaining routine urine and stool samples, and checking skin for ulcers, wounds, infections, and skin problems.

· Administers medication to residents and provides medication reminders, in accordance with established policy.

· Assists clients with activities of daily living such as feeding, lifts & transfers, bathing, skin care, basic wound care, oral hygiene, nail care, and toileting.

· Observes and monitors residents and their environments, and reports unsafe conditions and behavioural, physical, and or cognitive changes to the manager.

· Performs housekeeping duties such as sweeping and mopping floors, vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes, and laundry.

· Performs limited food preparation such as heating prepared food, and making tea, coffee, toast, salads, and sandwiches. Provides clients with nutritional assistance: meals, nourishment and tray service.

· Checks and restocks supplies such as personal care supplies, first aid supplies, and housekeeping supplies, and assists in taking inventory. Ensures care equipment and supplies are used and stored in a safe and efficient manner.

· Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as resident intake information.

· Supports and assists clients to participate in social, physical and recreational activities.

· Responsible for crisis intervention services in the event of overdose and response to complex emergency situations. Comprehensive knowledge of current street drugs and their presentation in individuals experiencing overdose is required.

· Responsible for de-escalating hostile interactions and informing management as necessary.

· Ensures adherence to accreditation, regulatory, and safety standards are met at all times (WorkSafeBC, PHS policies).

· Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

· Graduation from a recognized Resident Care Attendant or Continuing Care/Nursing Assistant Program, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

· Recent related experience of one year.

· Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job with a strong understanding of WorkSafeBC practices and standards.

· Awareness and sensitivity to the needs of others.

· Must be able to demonstrate core competencies of the PHS mandate and approach to providing client-centred care under a harm reduction model.

· Knowledge of mental health diagnoses and concurrent disorders.

· Strong communication skills. Ability to work with multiple stakeholders: PHS staff; clients; clinic staff and external agencies.

· Excellent conflict de-escalation skills; awareness of impacts of mental health, cultural and addiction challenges.

· Strong interpersonal skills; working knowledge of conflict resolution and crisis intervention techniques.

· Knowledge of harm reduction approaches and overdose symptoms. Must have current CPR, First Aid, Narcan and Overdose Management training.

· Excellent organizational skills; able to adjust to dynamic high-pressure environment.

· Ability to accomplish tasks, both self-directed and as part of a team.

· Current knowledge of medication administration, recording and storage.

· Understanding of the Downtown Eastside and the complex intersection of issues experienced by the community members. Experience working with marginalized populations, employing anti-oppressive practices.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Job Type: Permanent, part-time

Schedules (2 to choose from):

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 12:00PM to 8:00PM {30 hours/week}

Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 12:00PM to 8:00PM {22.5 hours/week}

Wage: $27.92 {Grid 21}, wages according to Union Contract, CUPE 5536
