The Position: Laboratory Manager

We are looking for a Laboratory Operations Manager for our core lab (Chemistry & Hematology). This will be for morning shifts. The Laboratory manager functions in both an administrative and technical capacity, overseeing the effective operation of all departments within the laboratory for the evening and overnight shifts.

As a manager, you excel in problem-solving and take pride in ensuring that operations are productive. You will be responsible for supplies and equipment, health and safety, quality control and assurance. The role involves placement of staff, scheduling, coaching, resolving issues, and acting as a liaison with management.

Duties:

  • Organize workflow, develop and maintain work schedules, and ensure laboratory employees perform tasks efficiently.
  • Monitor employee productivity, provide feedback, set performance goals, and conduct annual evaluations.
  • Advise on and manage laboratory supplies, equipment, and documentation, including SOPs and quality control records.
  • Provide bench coverage, perform tests requiring independent judgment, and ensure compliance with safety and confidentiality policies.
  • Assist with training, continuing education programs, and evaluation of new methodologies and equipment.
  • Address unusual events and concerns promptly and oversee technical operations for evening and overnight shifts.
  • Review Monthly QC data for shifts and trends, adjust as deemed necessary
  • Participate in the internal and external proficiency program within the laboratory
  • Participate in the Quality Management program within the laboratory examples: internal audits, occurrence reporting and quality indicator data.
  • Conduct/ Participate in annual performance evaluations and competency assessments of MLA/MLT team members.

Continuing Education:

Participation in annual continuing education mandated by the CMLTO; proof of achievement is required. Compliance with company training programs such as Code of Conduct, WHMIS, AODA.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum six (6) years as an MLT with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity
  • In good standing with the CMLTO (College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario)
  • IQMH and Accreditation knowledge and background
  • Understanding and application of safe work practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislation, regulations (including PIPEDA and PHIPA) and accreditation requirements.
