Job Description

WHAT'S THE JOB?

The Licensed Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing critical infrastructure in remote camp facilities, with a focus on gas, plumbing, electrical systems, and commercial appliances. This role ensures all mechanical and utility systems operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards. The technician will also support preventative maintenance programs, emergency repairs, and general facility upkeep to ensure uninterrupted operations in a challenging northern environment. Ideal candidates will hold a valid trade license (e.g., Gasfitter, Plumber, Electrician, or Commercial Appliances) and demonstrate strong technical expertise, safety awareness, and adaptability to remote work conditions. This position requires fly-in/fly-out travel from Edmonton, Alberta or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to the project site in Nunavut, with potential for weather-related delays or logistical challenges.

The position involves a remote work lifestyle in a camp setting with the following amenities:

  • All meals and accommodations are provided 
  • Travel is provided to and from the site locations from Edmonton, AB
  • Private room with cable television 
  • Access to Wi-Fi 
  • Access to laundry facilities and detergents 
  • Access to a gym and common areas 

Working Conditions: 

  • Remote camp environment with extended periods away from home (4 weeks on/2 weeks off) 
  • Extreme weather conditions are common in Nunavut 
  • Extended periods of darkness/no sunshine this time of year 

Key responsibilities include:

General Maintenance Duties

  • Perform scheduled and corrective maintenance on camp infrastructure (heating, water, electrical, and mechanical systems).
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and diagnose technical issues promptly.
  • Document all repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities as per company policies.
  • Support other facility maintenance activities, including structural, HVAC, and emergency systems.
  • Maintain tools, parts, and consumables; ensure secure storage and availability for operations.

Commercial Kitchen Equipment & Appliances

  • Install, commission, troubleshoot, and repair ticketed commercial appliances and foodservice equipment, including (but not limited to) combi ovens, ranges, griddles, fryers, steamers/kettles, dishwashers, heat lamps, ice machines, walk-in coolers/freezers, and reach-ins.
  • Perform OEM-recommended preventative maintenance (e.g., descaling, filter changes, gasket/seal replacement, burner/igniter service, thermostat and probe calibration).
  • Diagnose and repair gas, electric, steam, and light refrigeration systems related to commercial appliances; verify gas pressures, regulators, combustion/venting, electrical loads, elements, contactors/relays, and control boards.
  • Coordinate with manufacturers' authorized service channels and vendors as required; maintain accurate service logs and parts usage for each unit.
  • Work with culinary leadership to schedule downtime to minimize service disruption; support HACCP/food-safety practices during service/PM (temperature checks, sanitation, and re-commissioning).

Gas Systems

  • Inspect, install, and maintain propane/natural gas appliances and piping.
  • Conduct leak tests, pressure checks, and regulator inspections in compliance with safety codes.
  • Respond to gas-related emergencies and implement corrective actions safely.

Plumbing Systems

  • Maintain potable water systems, sewage treatment, pumps, fixtures, and drains.
  • Perform winterization, thawing, and pipe repair in Arctic conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with health regulations for potable water and wastewater systems.

Electrical Systems

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, including lighting, power distribution, and generators.
  • Conduct preventative testing (e.g., insulation resistance, continuity) and maintain electrical panels.
  • Respond to electrical faults and ensure compliance with CSA/CEC standards.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Complete daily Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs) and Pre-Task Hazard Analyses.
  • Ensure compliance with CSA, provincial/territorial codes, and occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Participate in safety meetings, drills, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow all company and client safety protocols.
Qualifications

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Valid Journeyperson certification in Gas fitting, Plumbing, or Electrical (Red Seal preferred).
  • Ticketed commercial appliance competency- for example, CFESA certifications in Electrical, Gas, Steam, or Refrigeration; a CFESA Master or equivalent provincial/ territorial Commercial Appliance Technician ticket is considered a strong asset. (Manufacturer training on brands such as Rational, Garland, Hobart, Manitowoc, etc., is an asset.)
  • Minimum 2–3 years' licensed experience in commercial, industrial, or camp maintenance.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety, lockout/tagout, and hazardous materials handling.
  • WHMIS, Fall Protection, and Confined Space certifications (or willingness to obtain).
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills across trades.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Competency in interpreting technical drawings, manuals, and schematics.
  • Culturally respectful and able to work in diverse, multicultural teams, including Indigenous and Inuit staff.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, and climb ladders or stairs for extended periods.
  • Work in confined spaces and at heights when required.
  • Tolerate Arctic conditions: heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid environments.

Work schedule and remuneration: 

Maintenance Technicians work on a rotational schedule of 4 weeks on/2 weeks off in Nunavut. The site location is a remote setting, requiring air travel to site. You may be required to work nights, weekdays, weekends, and general holidays. Wages are paid on an hourly basis with a starting rate of $38.00 per hour. Group benefits are included upon the date of hire. Occasional travel may be required to different camp sites within the region.
