BASKETBALL COACH

Employment Type: Short-term, part-time (November 2026 to March 2026).

Position Start Date: Immediately.

Hours of Work: Typical hours of coaching are Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45-6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 1:00-3:00pm throughout the school term, with the possibility of excursions or other activities scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays and/or Sundays.

Compensation: $3,000 for the term of the contract, paid pro-rata based on the start date.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Seasonal Basketball Coach leads a co-curricular activity in Shawnigan Lake School's after-school program for students from Grades 8–12. The purpose of this role is to provide high-quality basketball instruction and mentorship, contributing to the holistic development of student-athletes within the school's core values.

Shawnigan Lake School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff (and volunteers) to share this commitment. Candidates will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with previous employers and a vulnerable sector criminal record check.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide coaching each week to Junior and Senior levels
• Complete thorough lesson preparation for all practices and games
• Conduct goal setting for students within the sport
• Provide written evaluation of student progress three times during the academic year
• Evaluate student effort at regular intervals
• Communicate student progress and attendance with Head of Basketball
• Work with Head of Basketball to deliver both on campus and off campus sporting events

REQUIREMENTS 

• Experienced with delivering instruction/coaching in the designated sport or activity
• Able to work with students of varied ability and aptitude
• Skilled at working with teenagers, preferably in a boarding environment
• Strong communication skills
• Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability and reliability
