Position Summary
The Health Promotion Specialist supports effective, evidence-informed public health practice at Algoma Public Health (APH) through the analysis and synthesis of research, application of health promotion principles and theories, and the development of partnerships and plans to advance healthy public policy. This position supports the delivery of the Ontario Public Health Standards through the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-informed public health interventions, which improve population health outcomes and advance health equity.
As part of your work, you will:
- Apply knowledge of population health, determinants of health, health promotion theory, health promotion principles and evidence-informed decision making to support the work of local public health.
- Apply specialized knowledge and competencies to appraise and synthesize current evidence regarding options for health promotion action that is effective in a northern Ontario setting.
- Retrieve and synthesize population health status information to describe the importance of underlying causes of a health issue.
- Provide strategic policy advice and write clear and concise briefs on health promotion issues.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn and expand knowledge tailored to the team in which you are hired for.
- Work in a self-directed manner to support internal teams to advance public health priority areas.
- Assist in the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of information related to population health status and health promotion action.
- Collaborate with APH programs to support population health assessment and effective public health practice.
- Develop collaborative relationships with internal and external partners across sectors to enhance the impact and sustainability of health promotion action.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills for this position include (but are not limited to):
- Master's degree in public health, health policy, health promotion, health science, epidemiology, social sciences, or related discipline and/or combined relevant experience.
- 2-5 years' experience working in a public health setting, preferably in Ontario.
- Strong knowledge in quantitative and qualitative research methods and an understanding and appreciation of health promotion principles and theory, healthy public policy, and the policy process.
- Experience in conducting rapid reviews of the literature, including literature search, environmental scan, critical appraisal, and evidence synthesis.
- Ability to prepare and deliver high quality knowledge products, including written reports and presentations for diverse audiences and purposes.
- Demonstrated skills related to knowledge translation, consultation, facilitation, and capacity building among diverse audiences.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a self-directed, and highly responsive manner, to establish priorities and balance multiple projects.
- Competence in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Must be reliable and have a good attendance record.
- Ability to work outside regular business hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is essential, proficiency in both official languages is considered an asset.
- Requires a valid "G" Ontario Driver's License, use of a reliable vehicle, and ability to travel to meet program needs.
- As a condition of hire, you are required to be fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine series, per our COVID-19 Immunization policy. Should you be the successful candidate, you will be required to comply with our COVID-19 Immunization policy that is in effect.
