Position Overview
This leadership role is responsible for driving the safe, efficient, and strategic execution of capital work across the province. Reporting to the Regional Manager, PMO, the Contracts Manager oversees contracting strategies, project delivery, contractor performance, and team leadership. The role is pivotal in ensuring alignment with organizational goals, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement in safety, quality, and operational excellence.
In this role, you will:
- Lead Contracting Strategy: Develop and manage contracting strategies for major construction projects, including recurring mains and services contracts. Negotiate nonstandard terms and resolve disputes at a senior level.
- Oversee Project Execution: Ensure successful delivery of capital projects by managing risks, budgets, schedules, and contractor performance across the province.
- Manage Teams: Lead a team of managers and supervisors overseeing over 30 contractor crews. Hire, train, and support staff to ensure consistent execution and high performance.
- Ensure Safety & Quality: Develop and implement contractor safety and quality assurance programs. Conduct regular reviews and feedback sessions to drive continuous improvement.
- Coordinate Workload & Resources: Maintain project schedules, anticipate peak demands, and ensure contractor availability through strategic planning and economic testing.
- Drive Compliance & Governance: Ensure all contract assignments align with corporate capital approval and procurement policies. Provide oversight for smaller contracts and delegate execution as needed.
- Travel Across the Province: Support operations and teams throughout the FortisBC service territory, requiring regular travel.
What it takes:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or AScT designation.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation preferred or willingness to obtain.
- 8–12 years of progressive leadership experience in project and contract management.
- Proven track record managing large-scale capital projects and contractor teams.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to align contracting and project strategies with organizational goals.
- Leadership: Strong people management, coaching, and change leadership skills.
- Contract & Procurement Expertise: Deep understanding of procurement principles and regulatory frameworks.
- Risk & Budget Management: Skilled in assessing risks, managing budgets, and implementing controls.
- Safety & Quality Focus: Commitment to safety leadership and continuous improvement.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution.
- Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with transmission & distribution systems, safety processes, and software tools.
