In the role of Transportation Planner, job responsibilities will vary depending on the strengths of the potential candidate and opportunities available, but will generally include:

  • Supporting transportation master plans, secondary plans, and environmental assessments
  • Macroscopic travel demand modelling and analysis of model outputs
  • Supporting the development of multimodal transportation options
  • Transit planning studies, business cases development
  • Transportation best practice and emerging trends research and report development
  • Data processing, analytics, and visualization
  • Preparing materials for and attending client, public and stakeholder meetings
  • Technical report writing
  • GIS / mapping
  • Traffic and microsimulation analysis (Synchro/Vissim/Aimsun)
  • Field Surveys / ObservationsTraffic Modelling / Traffic Operations Analysis

Job Skills

  • A self-starter, comfortable working in a team environment, with strong interest in transportation and developing transportation solutions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Fluency with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project, and PowerPoint)
  • Fluency with EMME, VISUM, Synchro, Aimsun or Vissim, or similar demand modelling and traffic simulation platforms, ia an asset
  • Programming skills in languages such as Python and R is an asset
  • Working knowledge in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and/or analytic tools such as Tableau/PowerBI is an asset
  • Progressive and innovative approach to problem-solving an asset
  • Knowledge of travel demand modeling, transit service planning, active transportation, and understanding of the current transportation planning context is an asset
  • Knowledge and application of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Process (MCEA), Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), TAC Manual, MTO Geometrics Design Manual

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree is an asset
  • A minimum of two years of experience in transportation planning and engineering including master and secondary plans, highway and transit infrastructure projects, environmental assessments, traffic operations studies, macro/meso/microsimulation modelling, transportation business cases, traffic impact studies, traffic safety, pedestrian and cycling studies, and traffic management plans.
  • Experience with projects involving LRT, BRT, or subway / heavy rail is an asset
  • Familiarity with planning policies and guiding documents in the BC, ON, or AB is an asset.
  • Experience working on projects with public agencies in British Columbia, Ontario, or Alberta (such as Translink, BC MoTT, MTO, Metrolinx, TTC, York Region, Peel Region, or City of Toronto) preferred.
  • Eligible for future engineering licensure in Canada.
