Position Summary:
Trillium Health Partners (THP) is looking for a passionate and experienced safety professional to join its People Safety department as a dedicated Safety Specialist. Reporting to the Manager of People Safety, your expertise will support THP in improving the overall health, wellbeing and safety of individuals through the promotion of a safe, healthy and respectful environment. The successful candidate will provide expert knowledge of occupational health and safety principles to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and avoidance of financial penalties through incident investigation, hazard identification risk assessment, development and delivery of training and education, program and policy development, program monitoring, auditing and inspecting, and managing, analyzing and reporting on relevant data.
Key Responsibilities:
- Gain a thorough understanding of all operational environments at THP as it pertains to employee safety.
- Develop partnerships and work collaboratively with all internal and external partners and participate in related committees (e.g., joint health and safety committees, emergency management committee), working groups (e.g., workplace violence) and meetings as required for successful program deployment and sustainability.
- Provide core occupational hygiene and safety services to support health and safety programs and policies including but not limited to occupational hygiene investigations, hazard identification risk assessments, air sampling, noise monitoring, spill and emergency response, selection and use of personal protective equipment, occupational health and safety training, etc.
- Develop, communicate, implement, and sustain occupational health and safety programs, audit and evaluate programs, and use audit results to revise existing programs to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
- Provide support in the management and maintenance of construction and contractor health and safety policies including participation in activity permit review and approvals, construction site hoarding approvals and audits, project site decommissioning and pre-occupancy inspections, contractor occupational health and safety orientation, and other related activities as required.
- Proactively identify workplace hazards such as biological, chemical, and physical agents; evaluate the potential for staff exposure to these workplace hazards and assess the risk to staff and others within the organization; assess the need for interventions to comply with occupational health, safety or environmental laws; and determine control measures to eliminate or mitigate the risk to employees and the organization.
- Review staff, professional staff, learner and volunteer health and safety incidents and conduct investigations to determine root cause(s) and recommend corrective actions to ensure effective and sustainable controls.
- Provide ongoing education, advice, consultation and support to leadership and individuals as it relates to all operational and continuous improvement matters involving health and safety.
- Develop and deliver end user documentation and health and safety training as required.
- Monitor and analyze trends and keep apprised of new or revised legislation to maintain and enhance current plans, policies and procedures; anticipate the impact of changes on the organization and promote legislative compliance and best practices.
- Track and report on key metrics for monitoring work and safety performance.
- Improve operational efficiency by identifying and recommending new or improved policies and procedures as they relate to health and safety.
- Report to legislative bodies as required and represent THP in dealing with government representatives and enforcement agencies such as the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, Skills and Development, Ministry of Health & Long Term Care, Transport Canada, Public Health Ontario, and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Coordinate the Hospital's response to any orders or requirements received.

Key Qualifications:
- Post secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution.
- Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in occupational health and safety, including management of health and safety programs.
- Must meet current eligibility requirements and become certified within 1 year or already be certified by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) and be in good standing.
- Health and safety experience in a healthcare setting considered an asset.
- Specialization in occupational hygiene, ergonomics or other related fields considered an asset.
- Sound working knowledge and experience with health and safety legislation including the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, etc.
- Excellent problem solving, analytical and conceptual thinking skills.
- Self-starter who sets priorities and drives deliverables to execution with minimal supervision; able to anticipate and proactively respond to requirements based on prior experience.
- Strong relationship management skills with experience in partnering, influencing, coaching and building credibility with leadership, employees, Joint Health and Safety Committees, contractors, and other key partners.
- Strong change management skills with demonstrated ability to act as a catalyst for change within a business.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills to develop and deliver projects, tools and resources with superior attention to detail and proficiency in technical writing.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Highly computer literate, with excellent proficiency in the Microsoft suite of applications.
- Ability to work flexible hours when required.
- Valid Class G Driver's license and access to reliable vehicle.
