ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Indigenous and Rural Relations Department is dedicated to fostering strong, respectful, and collaborative relationships with Indigenous and Rural Communities across the Region. The team ensures that municipal programs, services, and decisions are informed by meaningful engagement, cultural awareness and a commitment to reconciliation.

Key functions of the department include:

  • Leading engagement and consultation with Indigenous and Rural Communities.
  • Supporting cultural awareness and reconciliation initiatives across the Municipality.
  • Developing and maintaining protocols that respect Indigenous traditions and practices.
  • Providing advice and guidance to Council and administration on Indigenous and Rural matters.
  • Advocating for the unique needs and priorities of Rural Communities.
  • Partnering on Community development projects that enhance inclusion, sustainability and quality of life.

By advancing partnerships, supporting community voices, and celebrating the diverse histories and traditions that shape the Region, Indigenous and Rural Relations plays a vital role in creating an inclusive and connected Wood Buffalo for today and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Coordinator, Fort Chipewyan Airport assists with the safe and efficient operation of the airport to ensure compliance with Transport Canada Regulations. The incumbent will administer the safety management system (SMS) and processing of all airport documentation for the Fort Chipewyan Airport. The incumbent will provide assistance and field services for airport related issues such as safety, security, and compliance. This position is located in Fort Chipewyan approximately 233 km north of Fort McMurray.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure compliance with all airport policies, procedures, and Transport Canada standards and regulations.
  • Assist in conducting airside investigations including data collection, reporting, as well as trend identification.
  • Gather, produce, and maintain records applicable to the airport safety program, including the hazard register and internal auditing.
  • Maintain all hazard assessments, job observation, and task hazard assessment programs.
  • Provide input and administrative support in the development of long-term plans relating to airport operational requirements, projects, and emergency response plans.
  • Schedule and prepare documents for safety meetings.
  • Coordinate and schedule training with external providers, maintain training records, and ensure that staff meet the training requirements as per Transport Canada regulations.
  • Participate in safety audits, inspections, and work observations.
  • Work with department leaders to establish corrective and preventative actions and implementation dates to ensure the airport is in compliance with regulation.
  • Assist with the development, integration and deployment of new applications, system software, or enhancements to existing applications.
  • Liaise with SMS web provider for regulatory upkeep of the site.
  • Mentor and assist staff with Transport Canada Regulations and facilitate introductory SMS training.
  • Assist in forecasting costs, budget preparation, and prepare and issue reports and statistics.
  • Liaise with Safety team and Transport Canada for regulatory reporting.
  • Ensure an adequate inventory of equipment and supplies is maintained.
  • Complete training as required by operations, to improve skills or to ensure adherence with the regulated standards of position.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Broad knowledge of the standards and best practices pertaining to airport operations and applicable Transport Canada Regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions relating to airport operations.
  • Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication, with technical skills for the development and delivery of initiatives.
  • Effectively manages multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • High degree of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner in written reports.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Certificate in Office or Business Administration is required.
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience working in an airport operations environment (experience must include working with airport safety management systems (SMS)).
  • Standard First Aid and CPR is required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class five (5) Operator's Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
