This position is at the L10 level with an hourly pay range of $ $72.65(PIPSC Bargaining Unit)
Reporting to the ED/ICU Clinical Care Manager (CCMs) the Emergency Department (ED) Charge Nurse plays a pivotal leadership role in coordinating and overseeing the delivery of high-quality emergency nursing care. As both a clinical and administrative resource, the Charge Nurse provides guidance and support to nursing staff, manages patient flow, and ensures that care is delivered in alignment with professional standards, organizational policies, and safety protocols. Key responsibilities include staffing and scheduling, patient assessment and assignment, supervision of care delivery, medication administration, supply management, and mentoring and evaluating team members. The Charge Nurse also provides direct patient care as required, responding swiftly to changing clinical needs. This role requires strong leadership, effective communication, advanced clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills, along with expertise in emergency care and the ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced and hold self and others accountable in a dynamic environment.
Knowledge and Skills required:
- Comprehensive knowledge of emergency nursing theory, evidence-based practice, and clinical guidelines, with the ability to apply this knowledge to a broad range of acute and complex patient presentations.
- Thorough understanding of the standards of nursing practice and their application within a fast-paced, high-acuity emergency care setting.
- Broad knowledge of interdisciplinary roles within emergency care and the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, allied health professionals, and external partners to support coordinated patient care.
- Strong understanding of patient flow principles, including clinical pathways, length-of-stay expectations, repatriation processes, and resource utilization strategies relevant to emergency services.
- Knowledge of external agencies, community supports, and system partners involved in patient transitions, discharge planning, and continuity of care from the emergency department
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to provide direction, mentorship, and support to nursing staff while maintaining composure and sound judgment in high-pressure and rapidly changing environments.
- Proven ability to analyze complex clinical and operational situations, anticipate challenges, manage conflict, and implement timely, effective resolutions.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams, fostering effective communication and strong relationships with patients, families, colleagues, physicians, and community partners.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple demands to ensure safe and efficient emergency department operations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and sustain positive change, contributing to quality improvement initiatives and supporting a culture of safety and continuous learning.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey information clearly and with empathy in stressful and sensitive situations.
- Ability to provide culturally safe care and engage respectfully with patients, families, and communities from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, including Yukon First Nations.
- Proficiency in CPR and other emergency response techniques relevant to acute care settings.
- Demonstrated computer literacy and ability to use electronic health records, clinical documentation tools, and other digital systems essential to patient care and departmental operations.
The successful applicant will hold a Diploma or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, maintain current registration with the Yukon Registered Nurses Association, and possess current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. They will also hold Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Canadian Triage Acuity Scoring (CTAS) certifications. A minimum of three years of recent experience in an emergency department or related acute care unit is required.
Post-graduate emergency nursing certifications such as Emergency Nursing Certification, Critical Care Certification, Emergency Practice, Interventions & Care (EPICC), or Trauma Nursing Care Course (TNCC) are considered strong assets. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be considered.
