Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, The Recreation Technician E primarily oversees the provision of recreation services available for a cross section of the community. The position oversees program planning and implementation in a designated recreation section. It assists the Recreation Coordinator in defining program options by liaising within the community (e.g. networks, groups and organizations, to assist in identifying program interests). Provide assistance to external groups/organizations related to service provisions (e.g. equipment, staff person, running a special event, facility rental etc.). Provide input to the Recreation Coordinator in researching community needs and new program trends and the preparation of leisure awareness materials.

As the Recreation Technician E, you will:

  • Plan and schedule the delivery of recreation programs and services.
  • Coordinate the selection, training and evaluation of related staff, program leaders and volunteers. Schedule and supervise staff, related to programs.
  • In accordance with City and Departmental policies and guidelines, maintain financial and other information related to programs.
  • Assist in the development/maintenance of operational program and other data in systems.
  • Perform other duties associated with the position.

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, AND

  • A Degree or Diploma in Recreation/Leisure Services, Community Development, Business Administration or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience related to recreational programming.

  • Must have relevant supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of recreation and delivery of leisure services philosophy.

  • Demonstrated experience in administration, scheduling and coordinating recreation activities/programs and staff normally acquired at a junior classification.

  • Ability to use a computer, maintain databases, input and generate reports and maintain clear records (i.e. computerized registration system etc.)

  • Working knowledge of recreation equipment and general knowledge of facility maintenance and operations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of requirements to provide a safe environment for public and staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English – oral and written. Ability to communicate in other languages is considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated effective communication skills both oral and written in dealing with all levels of staff, community and the public in a respectful manner.

  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful relationships.

  • Ability to make presentations for training purposes and lead staff meetings.

  • Must be willing to attend/complete other training as identified by the department.

  • Ability to work various hours as may be required.

  • Must have successfully completed the following courses or be prepared to complete within one year:

  • Foundations of Supervisory Development or Workplace Leader
  • Safety Responsibilities for Supervisors/Managers
  • Diversity in the Workplace
  • The Role of the Supervisor/Manager
