YMCA of Northern Alberta is recruiting up to one new Director to serve on the Association's Board of Directors, representing Wood Buffalo Region, commencing in the first quarter of 2026.
About the Y
YMCA of Northern Alberta is a leading charity, recognized for its vital role in strengthening the foundations of community and dedicated to the development of thousands of people in spirit, mind and body. Our vision is strong kids, healthy families and thriving communities.
As one of the largest YMCAs in Canada and charities in Alberta, the YMCA has annual revenues of $72 million, more than 1,500 employees and 350 volunteers whose efforts are grounded in the values of inclusion, caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Guided by our vision and grounded in our core values, the YMCA's commitment to serve, learn and renew has ensured the Association's relevance to a changing community for over 117 years.
The YMCA has both the responsibility and the opportunity to be a strong leader, partner and advocate in creating the communities we envision. Our Strategic Plan focuses on three interrelated strategic directions:
- Ignite the talent and potential of our people and culture.
- Ignite lifelong wellbeing and community connection.
- Ignite participation in the YMCA and the communities we serve.
The Association delivers a wide variety of programs and services that include health, fitness and aquatics, child care and community and housing initiatives across northern and central Alberta and, in particular, Edmonton, Wood Buffalo, Grande Prairie and Red Deer.
We are committed to building healthy communities by:
- Leading, partnering and advocating in order to strengthen the foundations of local and global
- Valuing and respecting diverse perspectives and welcoming the participation of all
- Fostering opportunities for all individuals and families in our
- Nurturing personal growth in spirit, mind and
- Promoting holistic health and well-being.
- Cultivating future
- Encouraging philanthropy in all we
- Demonstrating our value and impact.
YMCA of Northern Alberta strives to integrate our value of inclusion in all that we do. We believe that strong leadership is created through the sharing of diverse experiences and perspectives. We actively strive to represent the communities in which we serve, and we welcome the participation of people who embody these principles and who reflect the many dimensions of diversity in those communities.
Due to a recent board vacancy, this year we are seeking candidates that are involved in their local community and would welcome applications from individuals residing in the region of Wood Buffalo.
Your ability to commit time is an important aspect of being a Board Director. The Board meets 5 times/year (4:30 pm – 7:30 pm), with a preference to in-person attendance in Edmonton, and we have two Board committees (the Audit and Finance Committee and Governance and Nominating Committee) who each meet 4-5 times/year. From time to time we also have special task forces that are established that would require additional time commitment. This translates into 40-50 hours/year of meeting time. Additional time is also needed for reviewing Board and committee materials in advance of meetings, and for the annual and ad hoc tasks required by the committees.
If you feel that you can contribute to our community through the YMCA, please submit a cover letter, in confidence, including your resume to Helena Hawryluk & Ken Glover, Co-Chairs of the Nominating Committee. All Applications must be submitted electronically via our online recruitment system. To apply, please visit: and click "view volunteer openings"
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS is Sunday, November 16th, 2025.
