Reporting to the Manager of Water & Waste, the RM of St. Clements in seeking a reliable and safety focused Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator to join the solid waste team. This full time position plays a key role in the daily operation and environmental compliance of the municipal landfill site located in Libau Manitoba. The ideal candidate is a capable and experienced equipment operator with strong communication skills and a commitment to responsible waste management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment including landfill compactors, dozers, excavators, and loaders.
  • Perform daily landfill activities such as waste compaction, cover application, slope maintenance, and traffic control.
  • Safely handle and manage divertible materials (Household Hazardous Waste, metals, tires, ewaste, refrigerants, mattresses, oil, trees/brush, etc.).
  • Direct landfill users to appropriate disposal areas and ensure correct separation of materials.
  • Monitor incoming loads for prohibited or unacceptable waste materials.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of landfill cells, leachate collection systems, storage ponds, drainage systems, and overall site infrastructure.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and reporting as required for regulatory compliance and landfill license conditions.
  • Interact with the public and co-workers in a courteous, respectful, and professional manner.
  • Work independently and exercise sound judgement to maintain safe and compliant site operations.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED (asset)
  • Ability to successfully complete and pass the Landfill Operator Basics Course & SWANA LOC exam within 6 months of hire.
  • Previous landfill or solid waste facility experience (asset).
  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment used in landfill operations.
  • Knowledge of waste diversion practices and handling of common special wastes.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide direction to landfill users.
  • Valid Class V Driver's License, clean Driving Abstract

Rate of Pay: Heavy Equipment Operator - $31.62 per hour plus $0.50 per hour if Landfill Operator Certification is obtained, less $1.00 per hour for 6 month qualifying period. This is a unionized position that includes a comprehensive benefits and pension package.

This role is based at the RM of St. Clements Class 1 Regional Landfill in Libau and does require work in varying weather conditions. Site business hours are currently Tuesday to Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm.

The preferred candidate would also have:

  • welding and/or mechanical ability, repairing of equipment above
  • experience operating other equipment such as tractor / lowbed, rubber tire backhoes, motor graders, tandem truck / snow plow
