Opportunity

Millennium Insurance Corporation, part of the Wheaton Group, is seeking a skilled and motivated 
Legal Counsel
 to join our dynamic and collaborative team. As a member of the broader Wheaton Group Legal Team, the Legal Counsel will be primarily responsible for managing insurance defence litigation and providing strategic legal advice to the Claims Department and Management Team.

This role involves independently handling insurance defence files of varying complexity, with a focus on civil litigation matters. These typically include claims for damages and compensation related to personal injury or property damage, brought on behalf of Millennium Insurance Corporation or its insured clients.

What you will be doing

  • Lead all aspects of claims litigation from initiation to resolution.
  • Exercise strategic influence to shape claims and litigation outcomes.
  • Independently prepare and conduct applications, mediations, pre-trial conferences and trials.
  • Draft pleadings, legal opinions, affidavits and other documents to support litigation processes, including mediation briefs and pre-trial memoranda.
  • Develop and adapt legal strategies for questioning, investigation and trial preparation, aligned with company objectives, risk tolerance and cost-efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with the Claims Department to assess and resolve litigation matters by providing assessments, opinions and legal research.
  • Provide general legal advice, training and guidance to the Claims Department, Management Team and Senior Executives.
  • Manage and liaise with external counsel on complex litigation files.
  • Support the development, review, and enhancement of claims practices and policies to mitigate financial and legal risk.
  • Stay current on legislative, judicial, and regulatory developments impacting the Canadian insurance industry.

What you bring to the team

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree and member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Minimum of 4 years of litigation experience, preferably in insurance defence or civil litigation.
  • Familiarity with property and casualty (P&C) insurance products, claims processes and the regulatory framework is preferred.
  • Proven expertise in reviewing and assessing productions, with experience conducting trials.
  • Skilled in alternative dispute resolution, including independent preparation and conduct of mediations.
  • Strong experience in drafting pleadings, conducting discoveries and providing coverage opinions, with demonstrated ability to develop litigation strategy and manage files from intake through resolution.
  • Ability to identify legal issues and apply appropriate legal principles to complex fact patterns.
  • Exceptional advocacy and negotiation skills, supported by strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills and time management, with the ability to manage multiple files independently.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to actively listen, connect with others and demonstrate empathy.
  • High level of professionalism and discretion in handling inquiries, correspondence and sensitive information.
