Recreation Leader

Position Description:
As a member of an energetic Recreation Day Camp team, you will provide recreational leadership and facilitation in one of Norfolk County's summer camps with responsibilities including program planning, program delivery, site and camper safety and administration; supervising groups of 1 to 10 participants (children or youth).
Through effective leadership and programming, this position enables children, youth, adults and families to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for the wellbeing of participants under the guidance of the Recreation Coordinator and in collaboration with the Regional Coordinator and Day Camp Coordinators, ensuring camp activities are safe, inclusive and high quality following the High Five model.
- Facilitate daily camp activities such as sports, games, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, crafts and special events. Helps to ensure programming is inclusive and adapted to camper needs with regard to safety, hygiene, weather, breaks etc.
- Closely monitor camper conduct and provide in-water supervision during all swim times.
- Keep attendance records and promptly reports absences to the Day Camp Coordinator. This includes knowing the location of each camper at all times during camp operation.
- Prioritize and ensure child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp and for each camper within his/her assigned group. Evaluates situations of potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
- Serve as a liaison with parents of campers, reinforcing Norfolk County's customer service, diversity and inclusion (children/youth with a disability, ethno-cultural, English as a second language, socio-economic) policies.
- Prepare and organize program equipment and supplies, reporting any inventory shortages/damages to the Day Camp Coordinator.
- Organize and assist with set up and clean-up of camp events, activities and programs.
- Assist with the facilitation of special events hosted by Norfolk County Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the campers. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise.
- Ensure all participants and parents are aware of upcoming events and schedule changes.
- Follow Norfolk County policies and procedures and Summer Day Camp procedures in program activities.
- Maintain positive, constructive relationships with staff and volunteers with the goal of meeting camper needs.
- Coach and mentor volunteers and campers.
- Provide regular updates and feedback to the Day Camp Coordinator.
- Attend all and participate in orientation, training sessions prior to and throughout the summer.
- Complete other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- High School – minimum of 15 years of age.
- Must be currently enrolled in a secondary education institution or institution of higher learning and be returning to school at the next available term.
- Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (if hired, must be obtained no later than camp start date).
- HIGH FIVE – Principles of Healthy Child Development (if hired, must be obtained not later than camp start date).
- Experience working with children; knowledge of child development, crafts, sports, music and/or games; experience working with adults and seniors considered an asset.
- Experience in a leadership capacity is required i.e. student council member, leadership role on youth council.
- Ability to prepare, facilitate and adapt program plans and activities on a daily basis.
- Excellent customer service and time management skills.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of the recreation programs offered by Norfolk County.
- Ability to work in a team environment, follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision, following all of Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
- Must be motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet).
- Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Note:
Must be willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.
At time of application must be enrolled in a post-secondary education institution or institution of higher learning.

Duration:
The duration of this contract will be approximately 3 months. Applicants are expected to fulfill the entire contract period commencing May 2026 until August 28, 2026. Training will occur in June and camp begins July 6, Schedules of up to 40 hours per week will not commence until June 30.
