About Our Opportunity:

The Directions Youth Outreach program works to promote safer, healthier alternatives for youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The focus is to promote awareness of, and connect youth to, appropriate services and resources to reduce the harm in their lives. This position will consist of working with a variety of at-risk, homeless, and street-entrenched youth under 25 (prioritizing youth 18 and under) struggling with addiction, intellectual, emotional, and social challenges, mental health issues, concurrent issues, and sexual exploitation. With the support of the program management, the Supervisor plans, develops, implements, and oversees the ongoing day-to-day operation of the program. It actively supports the Agency's awareness and goals around diversity and inclusion.

Salary: Grade 11 Step 1 ($33.01 per hour)

What do you need to succeed?

Education, Training, Experience

  • Bachelors degree in social work or in another related field, and/or a combination of experience and education
  • Four years' experience working with homeless and/or at risk youth, plus two years supervisory experience
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of community, social, and health resources, and systemic issues that affect low-income and marginalized people
  • Knowledge of substance misuse, sexual exploitation, adolescent development, and the problems encountered by chemically dependent individuals; basic understanding of behavioural management
  • Knowledge of and belief in the Harm Reduction model
  • Knowledge of program management and development procedures
  • Ability to manage teams of both staff and volunteers
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, mediate, manage aggressive behavior, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques
  • Ability to establish/maintain satisfactory work relationships with the public and other employees to deal tactfully and effectively with staff, volunteers, public and other agencies and to maintain confidentiality

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check
  • Current Standard First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention an asset
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver's license – requires submission of abstract
