Job Title: Executive Director

Reports To: Board of Directors

Overview

The Friends of the James River Park (FOJRP) seeks a dynamic, visionary, and experienced Executive Director (ED) to lead and grow the organization. The ED will be the key operational leader responsible for ensuring the organization fulfills its mission as the citizen stewards of the James River Park System (JRPS). The ED will work closely with the Board of Directors, City leadership, Park leadership and staff, volunteers, donors, and other community partners to provide ongoing support for the protection, expansion, and enhancement of the JRPS, while protecting its natural and historic environments.

Mission Statement of FOJRP

We are citizen stewards of the James River Park. We do this by providing ongoing support for conservation, enhancement, and recreational enjoyment of the James River Park System, while protecting its natural and historic environments.

Key Responsibilities for Executive Director

1. Leadership and Strategic Vision

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for FOJRP, advocating for the JRPS, the JRPS Master Plan, and the JRPS Natural Resources Management Plan within the Richmond community and before City leadership.
  • Lead the development and execution of the organization's strategic plan in partnership with the Board of Directors.  Prepare an annual report.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with the City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (including the JRPS Superintendent and staff), other conservation organizations, government agencies, and community organizations and stakeholders.
  • Ensure legal and ethical compliance with all relevant regulations and the preservation of the organization's 501(c)(3) status.

2. Fundraising and Financial Management

  • Develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive fundraising strategy to secure diverse funding, including individual major gifts, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, membership dues, and annual appeals.
  • Serve as the lead for major donations and grant opportunities.
  • Manage the organization's financial operations, including developing annual budgets, ensuring sound financial controls, and providing regular, accurate reporting to the Board.
  • Oversee the management of donor stewardship activities and annual events.
  • Responsible for maintaining and enhancing a donor management system.

3. Board Relations and Organizational Management

  • Support the Board of Directors in their governance responsibilities, preparing meeting agendas, materials, and reports, and facilitating effective communication.
  • Engage board members in key areas, leveraging their expertise and skillsets to the advantage of the organization.
  • Foster an atmosphere of collaboration, partnership, and cooperation among board members and staff.
  • Recruit, manage, and mentor staff and contractors, fostering a culture of passion, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Assist in recruitment of new board members, highlighting diversity and passion for the JRPS.
  • Oversee the administrative functions of the organization, including technology, record-keeping, and office operations.

4. Program Oversight and Community Engagement

  • Provide strategic oversight for key FOJRP programs, including invasive species management, volunteer coordination, and capital projects.
  • Lead efforts to raise public awareness of the JRPS's value, needs, and history through effective marketing, communications, and public relations.
  • Promote and manage FOJRP's digital presence, including the website, social media, and e-newsletters.
  • Champion and support volunteer initiatives, recognizing their critical role in the organization's success.
  • Attend various convenings, conferences, and functions as the representative of FOJRP, identifying collaborative or partnership opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in applicable or relatable fields.  Desirable experience could include experience in staff management, budget oversight, and organizational development.
  • Proven track record in successful fundraising, including experience with major donor cultivation, grant writing, and annual giving campaigns.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to articulate a compelling case for support to diverse audiences.
  • Track record in working collaboratively and creating partnerships.
  • Strong commitment to environmental conservation, urban parks, and the mission of the Friends of the James River Park.
  • Knowledge of the James River Park System and the Richmond community is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity CRM and financial software.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience and competitive with non-profit organizations of similar size and scope.
