POSITION: EDUCATION SUPPORT SERVICES MANAGER
HOUR OF WORK: PERMANENT, FULL-TIME (35 HRS/WEEK)
REPORTS TO: BAND MANAGER
WAGE RANGE: $81,900.00 to $91,000.00 annual salary
POSITION SUMMARY: The Education Support Services Manager will be accountable to the Band Manager and will carry responsibility for the operation and management of all services that fall under the Education Support Services of Tsawout First Nation. This includes the Childcare Centre, the Learning House After-School program, the Head Start program and student services.
The position requires operational and planning oversight of all education support services, delivery of strategies, managing the department's finances and human resources.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Relationship with Community, Leadership and Band Administration
- Provides recommendations to the Band Manager on matters pertaining to the short- and long-term education service needs of the Nation.
- Community Engagement: maintains regular lines of communication with the community to keep community members aware of changes in the education system and their means of access to education resources and supports.
- Supports and develops parental engagement with the education process to early learning and school aged services and programs.
- Ensures that the education services are responsive to changing circumstances in the community and provides advocacy for community members.
- Regularly organizes community surveys to remain aware of the community's educational needs and to obtain feedback about the level of satisfaction with the education support services being provided. Responds to complaints and resolves conflict, making appropriate referrals to other members of management when necessary.
- Prepares reports to the Band Manager as required on a regular basis. Maintains awareness of relevant changes related to the funding and governance education programs and services for community partners.
- Carries out other duties essential to the position as directed by the Band Manager.
Departmental Organization and Staff Management
- Leads by example, demonstrating fairness in leadership, a respectful attitude, personal integrity, nonviolent communication, and sound role-modeling.
- Ability to resolve conflict between members of a diverse group of education staff, departments and community members.
- Ensures proper training and staff discipline, completing annual performance evaluations while promoting staff professional development and resolution of labour issues. Clearly communicates expectations for performance and productivity for all categories of education staff.
- Ensures that new staff receive proper orientation, and that all staff are aware of their role in the education and training process for the department. Ensures that client safety and risk management standards are maintained at all times.
EXTERNAL PARTNERSHIPS AND NEW FUNDING:
- Proactively seeks new funding sources for education services by participating in and encouraging proposal writing. Develops long-term relationships/partnerships with relevant stakeholders and resources such as higher institutions of learning and training institutes.
- Participates in bridge-building activities with personnel within the local public and Tribal School systems.
National Child Benefit Reinvestment Program (NCBR)
- Prepare application, annual budget and annual report for the NCBR funding allocation.
Summer Student Funding
- First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) for summer program funding.
- Plan, budget and follow guidelines and criteria according to funder guidelines.
- Create job postings and descriptions for summer student employment opportunities.
- Coordinate screening and interview panel for summer students.
- Provide orientation and training to new summer recruits.
- Prepare and submit final reports to all summer student funders.
Committee Representation (as it related to position/duties)
- Participates and represent the Nation on all applicable committees, boards and entities designated by the Band Manager on behalf of SȾÁUTW̱ education.
Conflict Resolution and Advocacy
- Advocate and problem solve on behalf of clients, students and community members regarding concerns, funding, assistance in seeking alternate funding sources.
- Other forms of advocacy may include, conflict resolution,
- Refer clients, students and community members to appropriate agencies as necessary.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Early Childhood Education Diploma or degree
- Strong Management skills with minimum 4 years' experience managing staff, budgets, educational programs and curriculum development
- Registered member in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Education
- Current First Aid/CPR certificate
- Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check is required as a condition of employment
- Knowledge of Child Care and Early Years Act and licensing and legislative compliance
- Experience working with infant to junior children
- Solid understanding of child development
- Demonstrates ability to maintain an effective work relationship with families, colleagues, service providers, community members and regulatory program advisors
- Excellent oral, written communication skills and technical (computer) skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to work closely with other team members
- Sensitivity and respect for individual and cultural differences
- Knowledge of First Nations Culture and Language would be an asset
- Knowledge of community considered an asset
- Adequate energy level and ability to meet the physical demands of the job
