Description
The
Shipping Operator
is responsible for coordinating ship operations in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective manner to support the energy trading business, in accordance with charter-party terms and conditions. This role involves ensuring efficient operation of vessels, which includes coordinating ship loading, preparing voyage orders, arranging bunkering, managing agency appointments, and monitoring voyages. The Shipping Operator achieves these objectives while adhering to the company's compliance, safety policies, and international maritime regulations. This position is located in our Calgary, Alberta office on-site.
Responsibilities
- Direct commercial vessel operations and port scheduling according to charter-party terms and conditions and trading requirements.
- Monitor voyage progress and make adjustments as needed to minimize demurrage and operational delays.
- Manage commercial vessels, contractual performance, and communicate with Chartering, Trading, and Crude Operations teams.
- Maintain accurate and timely voyage instructions to ships, agents, and terminals.
- Coordinate with port agents, inspectors, and ship masters for documentation, berthing, and load/discharge operations.
- Review and verify voyage documentation (bills of lading, certificates of quantity/quality, etc.).
- Timely input of shipping information in IT SYSTEMS, collect and save shipping and cargo documents.
- Maintain awareness of port restrictions, regulations, and ensure smooth operation.
- Coordinate and communicate with charterers, traders, cargo operators, brokers, agents, and vessels to facilitate resolving any issues related to ships.
- Maintain a detailed record of all invoices by analyzing and organizing freight and other shipping costs.
- Collaborate with Finance to provide accurate and timely data for invoicing and rebilling to third parties.
- Prepare shipping data and required statistics.
- Maintain accurate records for audit and reporting purposes.
- Collaborate with internal teams (Legal, Operations, Traders, Risk, and Finance) to ensure we successfully achieve business goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Global Logistics, or related field preferred
- 5+ years' experience in crude oil tanker commercial operation or chartering (preferably in an oil and gas or commodities trading company).
- Strong knowledge of tanker operations, charter parties, laytime, and demurrage concepts.
- Excellent coordination and communication skills.
- Analytical and problem-solving ability with attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple concurrent voyages.
- Familiarity with international shipping regulations and trade documentation.
- Availability to work after office hours will be required in urgent situations.
