Role Summary

We are seeking a Creative and Academic Writing Instructor who combines literary craftsmanship with pedagogical insight. The ideal candidate is an experienced writer—preferably a member of the Canadian Authors Association or a published author—with a passion for guiding young writers to think critically, write persuasively, and find their authentic voice.

You will teach advanced students (high-school to pre-university level) to master both academic writing and creative expression, developing their confidence in argumentation, style, and narrative coherence.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction — Writing, Rhetoric & Literary Expression

  • Teach small-group and one-on-one classes in academic essay writing, critical reading, and creative composition.
  • Help students analyze tone, structure, and style in literary and non-fiction works.
  • Coach students through the drafting, editing, and revision process for both creative and academic writing projects.
  • Provide in-depth written and verbal feedback that fosters refinement and originality.

Curriculum Development

  • Design or adapt writing workshops emphasizing voice, clarity, and narrative logic.
  • Create exercises that build rhetorical awareness and literary sensitivity.
  • Develop writing prompts and thematic reading lists that draw from contemporary and classic literature.
  • Maintain high editorial standards in all teaching materials.

Mentorship & Student Support

  • Offer individualized writing guidance, reading recommendations, and constructive editorial feedback.
  • Support students working on creative portfolios, literary competitions, or personal essays for publication or scholarship.
  • Communicate progress reports and mentorship notes clearly and professionally.

Professional Collaboration

  • Attend occasional faculty meetings and contribute to program design discussions.
  • Share expertise in creative and rhetorical writing with fellow instructors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in English Literature, Creative Writing, Education, or a related humanities field.
  • Minimum 2 years of writing instruction or tutoring experience with secondary or post-secondary students.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written English and a nuanced understanding of tone, structure, and style.
  • Strong editorial and feedback skills.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.

Preferred / Desirable

  • Member of the Canadian Authors Association or published author (fiction, nonfiction, or poetry).
  • Master's degree in English, Creative Writing, Rhetoric, or Education.
  • Experience mentoring emerging writers or editing literary work.
  • Familiarity with contemporary Canadian literature and creative pedagogy.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace or other online teaching tools.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $45.00-$60.00 per hour
