Waypoints is a registered, non-profit charity that has been operating in Fort McMurray since 1982. Waypoints offer facilities, programs and services for people that have experienced, or are experiencing domestic violence and/or abuse, or sexual assault and/or abuse. Waypoints also provides the community with public awareness events, initiatives and educational programs to increase the prevention of violence and abuse in the Wood Buffalo Region. Waypoints operate Unity House (an Emergency Women and Children's Shelter), the Opportunities for Change Centre, the Sexual Trauma Support Services, the CARE Centre (a Child and Youth Advocacy Centre) and The Compass, home of our Second Stage Shelter for women and children in need of transitional housing, as well as affordable housing.
Position Summary
Second Stage shelters across Alberta provide secure housing and support services to women and children who are fleeing situations of domestic violence. The term of stay in Second Stage can range anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Second Stage shelters often bridge the gap between emergency shelters and women survivors of domestic violence living on their own. Second Stage shelters help to provide the safety, security and wrap-around services necessary to helping families rebuild and thrive after experiencing the trauma of domestic violence.
Under the supervision of the Second Stage Manager, this position provides intensive case management for clients in Waypoints' Second Stage Housing Program by providing advocacy, referrals and ongoing support to clients who have experienced domestic violence. The main objective of this role is to provide support to women, with or without children, to maintain safe and affordable housing, while offering them the necessary tools to heal.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide intensive case management to women who have experienced domestic violence through weekly one-on-one appointments.
- Collaborate with clients in the formulation of goal plans. Review and modify goal plans in collaboration with clients, on a regular basis.
- Complete safety plans, danger assessments and other necessary assessments to help maintain client safety and guide case-management.
- Collaborate regularly with Child Development team and Second Stage Housing team to create and maintain comprehensive service plans for clients and children.
- Co-facilitate ongoing New Beginnings Support Groups for internal and external clients.
- Provide outreach, intensive case management, advocacy, and other necessary support to clients in a variety of environments including Second Stage, court, Alberta Works, collaborative case conferences, etc.
- Participate in case conferences with members of Waypoints' Second Stage staff and outside agencies on a regular basis.
- Assume reporting requirements in the Manager's absence.
- Maintain written and computerized records compile reports and complete other program documentation (e.g., progress notes, incident reports, case note logs, letters).
- Coordinate and monitor referrals to community services and advocate for client participation.
- Ensure that all programming follows a client-centered and strength-based approach.
- Create strong community connections with other service providers/public educators and collaborate to exchange input and services.
Requirements:
- Degree or diploma in Human Services with a focus in Social Work, Psychology or Sociology.
- Minimum 3 years' career experience in case management.
- Must have a valid class 5 driver's license and a clean drivers' abstract.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills.
- Experience working with survivors of domestic violence preferred.
- Experience working with Aboriginal populations preferred.
- Strong professional boundaries, patience, creativity, flexibility, compassion, and sensitivity for persons with disabilities and other minority populations.
- Current Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
- Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Current First Aid (AED) and CPR Certification.
Terms of Employment:
- In this position, you will work 75 hours per bi-weekly with the ability to flex hours of work to accommodate personal, client and agency need.
- The wage for this position is $35.51 per hour ($29.11 plus an additional $6.40 per hour Cost of Living Allowance to a maximum of $480 bi-weekly).
- This is a temporary position from December 2025 to August 2026.
