Job Title: Mixed Animal Veterinarian (Equine-Focused, Strong Small Animal)
Clinics: North Simcoe Veterinary Services and Midland Veterinary Service
Location: Just outside Midland, ON (near Georgian Bay / Cottage Country)
Who We Are
North Simcoe Veterinary Services is a family-owned mixed animal practice located on a farm just outside Midland, Ontario. Founded in the 1980s, we've grown with our community and still see clients who have been with us for over 40 years.
We are part of a two-clinic group:
- Midland Veterinary Service – strictly small animal, in town
- North Simcoe Veterinary Services – mixed animal (this role)
We're rural, community-oriented and proud of it – but we're also a busy, progressive practice with strong medical standards, modern equipment, and a collaborative veterinary team (late 20s–early 30s, grads from OVC, Dublin, Melbourne, etc.).
Our large animal caseload is heavily equine (pleasure / backyard horses, not performance sport medicine), plus beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goats, pot-bellied pigs, and the occasional alpaca/llama. Our small animal caseload is primarily dogs and cats.
This is a great match for someone who loves variety, real relationships with clients, and a team that actually hangs out together (vet socials, food, and lots of laughs) – and who isn't looking for a "slow and quiet" practice.
We're looking for a Mixed Animal Veterinarian who is:
- Excited to do a lot of small animal medicine and surgery
- Comfortable with horses and interested in mixed animal work
- Keen to participate in our large animal on-call rotation (equine + farm species; no small animal ER on call)
Depending on the rest of the team composition, the role will realistically look like:
- Small animal: Typically 60–80% of your time
- Large animal: Typically 20–40%, skewed heavily equine
We are very open to new graduates and early-career DVMs, as long as you're eager to learn and build confidence. We have a structured mentorship approach, but we're not a place where you'll be handheld forever — we're looking for someone who wants to grow into independence with strong support behind them.
New Grad Mentorship & Support
We've hired and successfully mentored many new grads, including international grads (e.g., Ireland). We have a clear, staged approach:
For Small Animal:
- Start by shadowing another vet
- Transition to your own appointments with another vet in the building and longer appointment times while you build confidence
- Gradually move to standard 30-minute appointments
- Goal: within a few months, you're handling typical GP caseloads comfortably, with colleagues readily available for consults
For Large Animal:
- Initially ride along and shadow for calls
- Move into doing basic calls independently once comfortable
- On-call progression:
- Month 1: shadow the on-call veterinarian
- Month 2: you are on call with a designated backup
- Backup support can be extended for additional months based on your comfort & performance
We love to teach and support – but we're also looking for someone who will take that mentorship and run with it, not someone who still needs intense handholding a year in. If you're a new grad who's keen to grow into a confident, capable mixed animal vet, this is an incredible environment.
Benefits & Perks
- 4 weeks of vacation to start
- Group health benefits (including extended health & dental)
- Clinic pays a portion of health premiums and 100% of dental premiums
- Benefits typically start after 3 months – for the right candidate, we're open to discussing waiving or adjusting this waiting period
- Professional fees paid (e.g., licensing, dues, malpractice insurance)
- VIN membership fully covered
- Continuing Education:
- ~$1,000 per year for approved CE
- Open to discussing additional CE for the right fit
- Uniform allowance (~$300–$400 annually)
- Clinic vehicle provided for all large animal work and on-call
- Supportive hospital administrator and strong support staff team
Lifestyle & Location
- Located just outside Midland, Ontario, near Georgian Bay, cottage country, ski hills and hiking
- About 1.5 hours from Toronto and 30 minutes from Barrie, just off Hwy 400
- Perfect if you like outdoor activities, lake life, and small-town community while still being able to get to the city when you want
What We're Looking For
Must Have:
- DVM (or equivalent) and eligibility for full, unrestricted licensure in Ontario
- We cannot accommodate restricted or supervised-only licenses for this mixed/large animal role
- Comfort (or strong interest + basic handling skills) working with:
- Dogs and cats
- Horses (non-performance, pleasure, backyard)
- Farm species (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs; alpaca/llama exposure is a plus)
- Willingness to participate in the large animal on-call rotation
- Valid driver's license
Nice to Have:
- 1–3+ years in mixed practice is an asset, but motivated new grads are absolutely encouraged to apply
- Strong communicator, friendly, team-oriented, and collaborative
- Able to thrive in a busy, sometimes hectic clinic (not afraid of a full schedule and an unpredictable day)
- Genuine desire to be part of a tight-knit vet team and rural community
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $120,000.00-$140,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
