At Impact Chemistry, we help solve our clients' unique technical challenges in our 4000 ft2 wet chemistry laboratory. Our creative and talented team execute technical projects for companies in the semiconductor, catalyst, battery and cleantech sectors. We provide synthetic chemistry services focused on custom synthesis, product & process development, and small batch (1-2 kg) production.

We are currently recruiting a Development Scientist with expertise in organometallic or inorganic chemistry to work with our semiconductor clients. This exclusive employment opportunity is located at our 945 Princess Street, Kingston, ON site with a flexible start date of March 2, 2026.

Development Scientists are responsible for designing and safely carrying out laboratory-based experiments to support product, process, and application development project deliverables. They also carry out general tasks related to the overall maintenance and safe day-to-day operation of our laboratory.

All candidates must be highly driven, capable of efficient time management, and must have, at minimum, a PhD or MSc (with 2+ years industrial experience) in synthetic organometallic or inorganic chemistry. Postdoctoral or industrial experience is a strong asset. A description of qualifications and responsibilities appears below. In the cover letter, please describe the extent of your experience in the following areas:

  • Organometallic or inorganic chemistry with a particular emphasis on the synthesis, purification, and isolation of air-sensitive/pyrophoric materials.
  • Hazards analysis and safe handling of air-sensitive/pyrophoric reagents using glovebox and Schlenk line techniques.
  • Provide details on the range of metals and types of complexes synthesized, including characterization expertise (e.g. NMR, TGA/DSC, GC, HPLC, surface analysis, etc.)
  • Ability to use your technical training to problem-solve and overcome technical challenges.
  • Ability to work expeditiously, safely and collaboratively in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to effectively and concisely communicate ideas and results to project stakeholders with a wide range of technical backgrounds.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design and execute laboratory-based experiments and analysis, in accordance with Impact Chemistry health and safety policies and project objectives.
  • Proactively review scientific literature and exercise excellent judgement to suggest experimental approaches to solve client technical challenges.
  • Prepare technical summary reports (MS Word, PowerPoint) and data packages (Excel).
  • Perform high-quality work, in a timely fashion.
  • Accurately record data, noting variances, using tools such as Electronic Lab Notebook software.
  • Analyze hazards and proactively develop and implement methods to reduce risk.
  • Communicate and interact effectively with fellow technical team members.
  • Have a passion for chemistry, working safely, collaboratively and helping our clients achieve their goals.

Qualification Requirements

  • PhD or MSc (with 2+ years industrial experience) in synthetic organometallic or inorganic chemistry.
  • Postdoctoral or industrial experience is an asset.
  • Excellent understanding of health, safety, and environmental requirements in a chemistry laboratory environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the desire to be a part of, and make meaningful contributions to, an effective team.
  • Strong skills in MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).
  • Currently legally permitted to work in Canada.
