You're passionate about keeping things running smoothly, love diving into the details of safety, maintenance, and production performance, and you know your way around a pulp and paper mill, we've got a spot for you.
We're looking for a hands-on, process-savvy Operational Specialist to support daily operations in one of our key production areas. You will be the anchor point between operations, maintenance, technical teams, and leadership, making sure performance stays sharp, processes stay safe, and everyone's rowing in the same direction.
A day in the life of an Operational Specialist:
Safety & Housekeeping
- You'll lead the charge on safety in your area, owning and updating all JSAs, CSHAs, lockouts, and SOPs.
- You'll ensure housekeeping standards are met, helping maintain a clean and hazard-free environment.
- Safety's not just a task list, it's how you work.
Operational Support – Keeping the Line Moving
- You'll coordinate with Shift Supervisors, Operators, Planners, and Maintenance Staff to plan for both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
- You'll minimize downtime during shutdowns, start-ups, and area outages with smart, well-communicated plans.
- Whether it's a major outage or a quick adjustment, you help get things back online efficiently and safely.
Performance & KPI Ownership
- You'll help define, track, and support area KPIs like cost, safety, uptime, and troubleshooting metrics.
- You'll identify and document lost opportunities, and more importantly, you'll dig into why they happened and how to prevent them.
- You'll work with Operators daily to improve repeatability, efficiency, and overall process capability.
Collaboration
- From vendors and suppliers to internal engineers and operators, you'll connect the dots.
- You'll coordinate materials, inventory, and support services for your area's needs.
- You'll be the go-to voice in your area for process questions, improvement ideas, and training.
Process Development
- You'll help develop and improve SOPs, training docs, and testing procedures alongside technical teams.
- You'll contribute to capital project planning by identifying operational constraints.
- You'll stay on top of industry standards, regulations, and ISO documentation to keep things compliant and competitive.
What You Bring to the Table:
- Hands-on experience in a pulp & paper mill or heavy industrial environment
- Strong understanding of production flows, shutdown/startup procedures, and safety systems
- Great communication skills: You're clear, consistent, and you know how to keep stakeholders aligned
- A knack for troubleshooting and finding better ways to do things
- A collaborative mindset: You coach, support, and help others succeed
Bonus Points if You Have:
- Lockout/tagout experience specific to pulp and paper
- Familiarity with IRIS, SAP, or similar maintenance planning tools
- Experience in facilitating or leading shutdown/outage planning
- Exposure to continuous improvement tools like Lean, Six Sigma, or RCA
Why This Role Matters:
At the heart of any mill is its people and the Operational Specialist is one of the roles that keeps things turning. This isn't just about keeping machines running. It's about improving how we do what we do, mentoring those around you, and being a key voice in creating a safer, more efficient mill.
