Legal Assistant or Law Clerk

LiUNA Local 183 is a trade union representing more than 70,000 workers in the Greater Toronto Area. We are seeking a Legal Assistant to join our busy in-house legal department. We currently have 9 lawyers, and 2 articling students, who have litigation focussed practices on behalf of our members.

This position is represented by the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union, Local 343 and is covered by a collective agreement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Trade Union labour law and administrative law

· Provide legal administrative support

· Schedule meetings and calendar management

· Draft, revise, file and send legal documents and correspondence

· Maintain electronic filing system

· Strong organizational skills

· Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with high professionalism

· Excellent customer service ethic and high expectations for quality

· Capable of working independently, while being a collaborative member of a team

· Additional tasks as required

Job Qualifications:

· Certificate in either Legal Administrative Assistant, Law Clerk or Paralegal (or equivalent five (5) years' legal assistant experience in a law firm or in-house legal department)

· In-depth knowledge and understanding of construction labour law considered an asset

· Knowledge of Ontario Labour Relations Board Rules and Procedures considered an asset

· High level of competence with office computer equipment and software applicable to law firms or legal departments

· Excellent written and oral communication skills

· Advanced knowledge in MS Office Suite and Internet research

· Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with an ability to work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail

· Demonstrated sound judgment in determining appropriate course of action quickly (including when to escalate issues for resolution)

Job Type:

  • Permanent, Full-Time (subject to probationary period)
  • $1,705.50 weekly
