Anew Centre for Healing is looking for a skilled candidate to fill the Full-Time role of a Youth Worker. We are looking for someone experienced, energetic, engaging, and enthusiastic
The Youth Worker will help to plan, structure, and implement activities as well as provide support to youth within the home and out in the community. This is a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity for someone who is passionate about the Indigenous Culture as this is the population you will be supporting.
The Youth Worker must be prepared to work irregular hours, have the ability to make sound decisions, and be able to act quickly in critical circumstances. The successful candidate will be supporting male youth aged 5-18 and it is the expectation that they will provide the highest quality of care with a trauma-informed lens and role model socially and professionally acceptable behaviours.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish trusting and meaningful 1-to-1 relationships with children, youth, and families;
- Teaching of living skills and social skills through role modeling of appropriate behaviour;
- Assist with the development and maintenance of problem-solving skills;
- Counseling skills that utilize problem-solving, de-escalation, goal-setting, and preventative interventions with clients in either a 1-to-1 or group scenario;
- Documentation of activities, themes, and follow-through of the youth;
- Providing youth with a sense of safety, acceptance, and nurturance;
- Remain within the "Scope of Practice" of Child and Youth Care Counselors;
- Implement strategies that include planned daily activities, coordinated treatment interventions, structured environments, and organized recreational and social activities that meet the recreational, educational, and therapeutic needs of the youth;
- Help individuals and families identify personal strengths and resources for positive change;
- Help develop and implement individual and group treatment programs;
- Respond effectively and calmly to crisis situations;
- Act as a resource for individuals and their families;
- Perform clerical duties to maintain youth support, youth goal setting, and team communication;
- Additional duties or tasks as directed by Leadership
Qualifications
- Human Services Degree or Diploma in a related field such as Child & Youth Care, Social Work, etc. with at least two (2) years of related experience;
- Current Criminal (with vulnerable sector search) and Current Intervention Record Check (6 months or newer);
- Driver's license with clear abstract and $2 million liability coverage on personal vehicle;
- Strong interpersonal skills that bridge the distance with individuals who may have a resistance to relationships, different morals/values, and alternative lifestyle choices;
- Non-judgmental manner with excellent active listening skills;
- Empathic and the ability to maintain strong, personal boundaries;
- Strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills, as well as good writing skills;
- Experience in working with diverse cultural and religious communities;
- Understanding of Client-Centered Theories and the Medicine Wheel;
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, beliefs, and traditions;
- Problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict-resolution skills;
- Proven skills to support through a trauma-informed scope
