This position is for the City of Vaughan's– Temporary Synthetic Outdoor Ice Rink at Laura Secord Park. The rink is a refrigerated system with a chiller, pump, diesel generator, lighting, and piping grid to maintain consistent ice quality.

Job Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the daily operation and upkeep of the rink, including:

  • Inspecting the ice surface and addressing rough areas
  • Filling low spots, repairing chips, and maintaining smooth ice
  • Shoveling snow (if/when required)
  • Applying thin water layers for freeze-ins when needed
  • Monitoring generator, pump, and chiller behavior (visual checks only)
  • Reporting equipment issues immediately (no mechanical work required)
  • Maintaining a clean and safe perimeter
  • Daily communication with the project supervisor

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience working in arenas, recreation facilities, or outdoor rinks (asset, not mandatory)
  • Comfort working outdoors throughout the winter
  • Reliable and detail-oriented
  • Able to perform physical work (light to moderate)
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-starter who can work independently

Work Schedule

  • Daily visit to the rink (15–45 minutes depending on maintenance needs)
  • Extra time during heavy snowfalls or freeze-thaw cycles
  • Periodic evening checks during warm weather spells

Compensation

  • Seasonal contract with competitive monthly or hourly pay
  • All equipment and tools provided
  • Priority given to applicants with arena or recreation experience
