Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Rocket Science Health Full time $100,000 - $130,000 per year

Position Summary

Rocket Science Health is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our small, mission-driven medical device startup based in Victoria, BC. Our team is developing a novel nasal drug-delivery platform, and this role will be pivotal in advancing the device from prototype to production-ready devices for clinical trials in the next calendar year. The position will be primarily in-person (approximately 75%) at our Victoria workspace, working hands-on with our prototypes and pilot builds, while collaborating remotely with our R&D team based in Seattle. You'll take ownership of mechanical design—translating pilot prototypes into production-ready parts, optimizing for manufacturability, and supporting validation and build activities. This is an opportunity to play a key role in shaping an innovative medical technology while contributing to a fast-paced, collaborative startup environment.

Core Technical Responsibilities

  • Generate detailed mechanical design of plastic components for medical devices, including part geometry, draft, wall thickness, ribs, and snap fits.
  • Develop 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks, compliant with GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Familiarity working within SolidWorks PDM
  • Design parts for injection molding and alternative plastic manufacturing processes, considering material properties and manufacturing constraints.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and tooling engineers to optimize mold design, gate/vent placement, draft, and ejection strategies.
  • Experience with Moldflow Analysis is a plus
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews and incorporate feedback into designs.
  • Develop assembly fixtures and jigs to support pilot and production builds.
  • Conduct tolerance stack-up analyses for part interfaces and assemblies.
  • Analyze load bearing components utilizing mechanical modeling, FEA, or empirical prototype testing.
  • Lead or support verification/validation (V&V) activities for injection-molded parts and mechanical assemblies, including first-article inspections, dimensional validation, and fit/function testing.
  • Support inspection method development, including metrology instrument selection, fixture development, and MSA/GR&R execution and troubleshooting
  • Troubleshoot and resolve molding or assembly issues during prototype and production builds.
  • Working knowledge of a wide range of manufacturing processes, including injection molding, extrusions, machining, 3D printing, thermoforming, and spring winding

Testing & Validation

  • Experience with molding validation protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) and assembly process validation

Documentation & Compliance

  • Support Design History File (DHF) documentation in accordance with medical device design controls
  • Support risk analyses (FMEA, DFMEA, PFMEA) and design mitigations

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in medical device design or similar regulated industry.
  • Strong knowledge of plastic part design and injection molding processes.
  • Familiarity with DFM/DFA, GD&T, and design controls.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis, mechanical testing, and validation documentation.
  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or legal permanent resident.

Compensation & Benefits
