Calgary, Alberta, Canada Helcim Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year

ABOUT HELCIM

Helcim was founded with a mission at heart: to be the world's most loved payment system. We believe that by offering small businesses in North America a decidedly human payment solution where it is easier to sign up and use while being transparent and affordable, we can empower them to grow and prosper. Simply put, helping small businesses thrive is at the very core of our business model, and we think that's a great way to do business.

From the very start, we knew that we wanted to be different from every payment processor out there. We want the merchants we serve to feel supported and see us as a trusted partner rather than simply just another "cost of doing business." We are relentless in our pursuit to provide a radically transparent and honest payments solution that flat out saves business owners money, all while treating them like human beings.

THE POSITION

Helcim is looking for a Senior Developer Experience (DevEx) Software Engineer focused on dramatically improving the productivity, happiness, and effectiveness of our internal engineering teams. You'll be instrumental in designing, building, and maintaining the tools, systems, and processes that define our internal engineering lifecycle.Your goal is for the entire software engineering department to be building products faster and with higher quality.

Here are the things you'll own day to day:

  • Internal Platform and Tool Development: Architect and implement core developer tools for our internal teams, including robust CI/CD pipelines, standardized local development environments, scalable testing frameworks, and efficient deployment systems.
  • Engineering Productivity Champion: Proactively identify and eliminate internal friction points, focusing on improving code quality gating, optimizing build and test times, accelerating deployment velocity, and enhancing internal debugging and observability workflows.
  • Standards and Best Practices: Define, evangelize, and enforce coding standards, architectural patterns, and security best practices across all internal engineering groups to ensure consistency and maintainability.
  • Collaboration and Mentorship: You will work directly alongside a Helcim Staff Engineer focused on DevEx to strategize, co-own, and deliver high-impact platform improvements. Additionally, you will partner with Product Development teams to understand their unique pain points and recommend projects that would resolve those issues.
  • Onboarding and Knowledge Sharing: Lead the creation of practical developer guides, tutorials, and comprehensive documentation to ensure rapid and effective onboarding for new software engineers and adoption by existing engineers.
  • Metrics-Driven Improvement: Establish and monitor key internal DevEx metrics (e.g., commit-to-deploy time, environment provisioning time) to drive a data-informed strategy for continuous platform improvement.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

  • Deep Empathy for Developers: A genuine passion for developer productivity and quality of life is essential. You should view our internal engineers as your primary users and prioritize their efficiency.
  • Technology Foresight: A proven ability to stay ahead of the curve on emerging technologies and industry trends (e.g., cloud-native tools, service mesh, new programming paradigms) and strategically evaluate which ones can best serve our engineering organization.
  • Automation with AI Focus: A strong bias towards automating repetitive tasks, specifically by identifying opportunities to leverage AI/ML tools or techniques to improve code generation, static analysis, incident response, or developer workflows.
  • Systems Thinking: Ability to understand our complex, interconnected internal build and deploy systems and design unified, elegant solutions that scale across multiple product teams.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Proven ability to work effectively in a pair-programming or collaborative technical leadership model, especially with a Staff-level partner, to drive large-scale technical initiatives.
  • Proactive Ownership: A willingness to take full ownership of significant portions of the internal developer experience, championing necessary change and driving initiatives from concept to widespread adoption.

Not checking every box? Please apply anyway We know that candidates have different experiences that may make them a great fit for this position and for Helcim. We believe that diversity and having an inclusive culture is not only the right thing, but key to our long-term success. Diversity brings more experience, view-points, knowledge and insight about our future. • Highly proficient in PHP + some Front end javascript experience (Vue/react/Angular/Vanilla JS).

HELCIM CULTURE IS;

Being builders: We build things ourselves and we build them well. We use technology and our creativity to overcome challenges that would seem beyond the capability of a company our size. We improve what is already there, invent our way out of problems and we never stop dreaming of better.

Choosing the harder path: We believe that the right decisions are usually the harder ones, so we embrace the challenge and endure when others quit. We choose what is difficult because it is more rewarding in the long-term, and makes us resilient, so that we not only survive but thrive.

Creating trust: We earn trust by striving to be our best selves every day and by lifting those around us. We recognize that trust is hard to earn, easy to lose and is tested continuously over time, so we make trust our way of life.

Contributing to a company of many: We are stronger because of our collective passion, diversity, and fellowship. We believe only great teams can accomplish great things, and we ask the very best of each other. Together we create our own future.
