INDIGENOUS FACILITATOR OF LEARNING: LOWER MAINLAND

Full-time Permanent| $33.00/hr

ABOUT SIERRA CLUB BC

Sierra Club of British Columbia Foundation (Sierra Club BC) is a non-profit environmental organization whose mission is to support people stewarding abundant ecosystems and a stable climate, while building resilient, equitable communities. Our overarching goal is to uplift community voices in response to the climate emergency and ecosystem collapse.

To do this, we engage with and learn from diverse communities and knowledge systems, including communities most impacted by the ecological challenges we all face. We are committed to learning from the governance systems of the diverse Indigenous territories where we live and work. This is an opportunity to join a dynamic team working to change our relationships with forest ecosystems on the Pacific coast.

We pay a living wage and are committed to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in both our hiring practices and work environment. We encourage people to self-identify in their application as being Indigenous. We are committed to building and maintaining a work environment that is welcoming to people who bring diverse ways of seeing, knowing, and communicating our work.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Indigenous Facilitator of Learning ('Environmental Educator') is passionate about inspiring young people/students to learn different ways of seeing the environment through the eyes of Indigenous Knowledges, and to be in harmony with the lands and waters and all other life forms that depend on a healthy environment.

Based in the Lower Mainland (Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, North Vancouver, Delta, Burnaby, etc.), you will join the Education Team to improve and deliver place-based education programs for Kindergarten to High School co-learners ('students'), acting as a public-facing representative of Sierra Club BC. You will also engage in pre- and post-program email communication with school facilitators of learning ('teachers') to support them to engage with SCBC educational resources and invite a deeper relationship with the beings just outside our doors. During the summer months, you will support Sierra Club BC Outreach at farmers markets in the Vancouver Area. You and your team will be responsive to the advice and counsel of the Education Program Lead and others. You will collaborate most closely with the other Facilitators of Learning and the Education Program Manager.

As a successful candidate you are:

  • An Indigenous person.
  • A Facilitator of inquiry-based learning.
  • Excited to engage learners in an outdoor setting.

  • Applying transformational learning in your approach.

We encourage applicants who may not have all the desired skills, knowledge, and experience to still apply. We may be able to help you grow into the role. We commit to providing a supportive growth environment.
