Job Description

Reporting to the Manager of Internal Communications, this position will foster engagement with our key internal stakeholders, with a focus on our Head Office and long-term care homes.

The ideal candidate has a knack for simplifying complexity and storytelling, and relishes the opportunity to build meaningful connections with the stakeholders they serve. This role ultimately supports our team members, residents, family members and other partners to Improve Care, Every Day and help people live better.

A national role, this position supports communications with our team members across Canada. The successful candidate will uphold our communication quality standards and strive to increase team member engagement. You will primarily focus on our long-term care division.

This position will be located between our Head Office in Markham. Extendicare offers a hybrid work model.

Contract Period: 9 months

Key responsibilities include:

  • Draft compelling content across a variety of channels for various internal audiences (e.g., employees, residents, family members, patients/clients).
  • Support with content planning, development and distribution via e-newsletters, intranet and other channels as appropriate.
  • Using critical thinking, and in consultation with the Managers and Director of Internal Communications, act as a strategic filter to recommend the most appropriate and engaging approaches to communication.
  • Provide support for internal communications for the Extendicare Head Office, helping to establish a framework and best practices in collaboration with key partners.
  • As part of a broader planning team, support the bi-annual National Leadership Conference, including logistics, event planning, project planning and content development.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Coordinator to maintain and update Extendicare's intranet, ensuring information and is accurate, up-to-date, and reflective of our brand.
  • Stay informed on internal and external issues impacting the health care sector, to support the team in ensuring relevant internal audiences receive relevant updates on issues that may have an impact on the business.
  • Share responsibility for managing central communications mailboxes to ensure timely responses to inquiries from employees, families, residents, clients and stakeholders.

What we're looking for:

  • Undergraduate degree in Communications, English or comparable experience, along with two to four years of experience in a communications role.
  • Familiarity with internal communications, public affairs and event planning.
  • Enjoys writing and demonstrates excellent writing skills with experience creating concise, compelling content for a wide range of audiences, with strong attention to detail.
  • Creative, innovative and critical thinker who is comfortable providing sound advice and challenging the status quo, while valuing collaboration and considering multiple perspectives.
  • Thrives in fast-paced, issue-driven and team-based environment, with a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and succinctly.
  • Ability to identify and quickly shift priorities, manage competing timelines and be relentless in getting the job done with colleagues who care deeply about their work and the people we serve.
  • Multimedia, video, photography, graphic design software and web content management systems experience an asset.
