POSITION SUMMARY

The Division of Continuing Studies at the University of Victoria invites expressions of interest for the development of the course EDCI 477 Designs for Learning in French Immersion as part of the forthcoming Teaching French Immersion Micro-certificate offered in partnership between the Division of Continuing Studies, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and the School of Languages, Linguistics, and Cultures at the University of Victoria. This certificate is a strategic response to the persistent shortage of qualified French Immersion teachers in British Columbia and the need for enhanced French proficiency and specialized pedagogical skills among pre-service and in-service educators.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

EDCI 477 Designs for Learning in French Immersion

Design and implementation of theme-based unit plans integrating language and content aligned with the British Columbia curriculum. Emphasis will be placed on developing authentic assessment strategies and leveraging innovative pedagogical approaches to foster high levels of French proficiency and student engagement. This course is taught in French.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Situate their pedagogical choices within the context of British Columbia's curriculum and the core principles of Canadian French Immersion education, analyzing how Ministry support documents inform classroom practice.

  2. Design, justify, and assemble comprehensive, theme-based units that strategically integrate language and content objectives, suitable for implementation in a classroom or practicum setting.

  3. Develop and apply a range of authentic assessment strategies to effectively evaluate student learning in both French language proficiency and subject-matter understanding.

  4. Critically analyze and apply theories of second language acquisition to address common pedagogical challenges and foster an engaging, communicative, and inclusive learning environment.

  5. Critically evaluate, adapt, and curate a portfolio of high-quality resources and technologies that support literacy, numeracy, and content learning for diverse learners in the French Immersion classroom.

  6. Develop skills for professional leadership by creating resources and strategies suitable for mentoring colleagues, supporting school-wide initiatives, and contributing to the broader French Immersion professional community.

Key Responsibilities: Course Design (EDCI 477)

The Subject Matter Expert (SME) will be responsible for the full asynchronous course design of EDCI 477: Designs for Learning in French Immersion. This includes:

· Developing a comprehensive course blueprint, including content development, unit breakdown, and alignment with course-level and micro-certificate learning outcomes. The course must focus on specialized pedagogical skills for French Immersion settings.

· Creating engaging learning activities, discussion prompts, and assignments suitable for an asynchronous online format to ensure accessibility and flexibility for working professionals across BC.

· Identifying and listing essential readings, multimedia resources, and practical French Immersion materials.

· Designing clear and rigorous assessment methods to evaluate participant learning, focusing on practical, go-to skills for the immersion classroom.

· Working closely with the UVic Continuing Studies program team and online development specialists to ensure quality, technological feasibility, and adherence to UVic academic standards and course design timelines.

Qualifications

· A Master's Degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

· An understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach in a French Immersion classroom environment.

· Proficiency in French is required.

Experience:

o Experience in K-12 French Immersion education, mentoring, and/or program facilitation is an asset.

o Previous teaching experience (designing content for a course, training or presentation) is preferred. Experience in online/distance education course development is considered a significant asset.

Pay Rate: While course development and instruction are two separate appointments, it is anticipated (and preferable) that the successful candidate will undertake both components. The stipend for course development is $7000 (CDN). The stipend for course delivery is determined on the basis of academic credentials and prior academic teaching experience.
