Reliability Engineer

Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc. (PCLI), an HF Sinclair company, located in Mississauga, Ontario is seeking a full-time Mechanical Reliability Engineer. Reporting to the Team Leader of Mechanical Reliability, the Front-Line Reliability Engineer (otherwise known as the Area Team Reliability Specialist) is responsible for leading reliability improvement activities, stewarding predictive/preventative Mechanical Integrity programs and completing asset Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) for their respective Cross Functional Team(s) to ensure the expected level of reliability is consistently achieved. The role is directly involved in day-to-day and long-term monitoring and troubleshooting of assets within a multi-disciplinary environment. Key stakeholders for this position include the Cross Functional Team (CFT) Leader, Maintenance Trade Supervisors, and Operations & Maintenance Coordinators. Key Supporting roles include peer Reliability Engineers, Rotating Equipment Specialist, Industrial Mechanics, Plant Vibration Technicians, Instrument and Electrical Specialist, Materials Technologist, Technical Services Engineers and Production Operators. Job Duties
- Support day-to-day production requirements through direct participation in CFT meetings and follow-up requests
- Assess condition of online equipment for suitability of continued safe and reliable operation
- Regular monitoring of critical assets and determination of failure cause(s) in consultation with stakeholders
- Identify corrective actions and support Planning in developing equipment scope of repair following failures; report through creation of SAP Notifications and help prioritize within CFT against competing work
- Support the identification, planning, budgeting and implementation of reliability improvement initiatives (MRIM)
- Steward the performance of predictive/preventative programs for mechanical assets (through PM validation, KPI tracking and reporting)
- Lead or support Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) for events impacting asset reliability; provide recommendations for improvement and support corrective actions
- Lead the development of Management of Change (MOC) documents for proposed Maintenance changes
- Ensure sustainment of asset Master Data; update Materials, Equipment and BOMs in SAP database
- Support Rotating & Static Equipment Specialists with validation of Mechanical Integrity documents
- Support Rotating & Static Equipment Specialists with development and implementation of asset strategies, including identification of spare parts, routine maintenance activities, long-term upgrades, obsolescence planning
- Support bad actor identification and improvement initiatives; identify and communicate successes, challenges and next steps
- Contribute to the preparation of annual maintenance/expense/capital budgets and Long-Range Plan (LRP)
- Provide input into capital project design; complete Green Table reviews of Front-End (FEED) and Detailed Engineering documents
- Support Turnaround/Outage scope development, planning and execution (i.e. identify key proactive asset repairs that deliver the expected level of reliability, provide shutdown QA/QC support for equipment scope of work, assist with start-up support, etc.)
- Provide reliability input into Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) reviews
Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion
Experience- A minimum 3 years of related refinery experience
- Related work experience overseeing a variety of rotating & static equipment operation and repairs is a strong preference
- Knowledge of developing Mechanical Integrity (MI) asset strategies, PM programs and sparing philosophy for mechanical equipment is an asset
- Critical Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) techniques is also an asset
Education Level
A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, OR Technologist Diploma in related mechanical field with additional years of relevant work experience Required Skills
- Safety mindset; in-depth knowledge of Health & Safety standards and procedures
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Ability to learn new skills quickly, multi-task, organize work and prioritize efficiently
- General understanding of working principals of refinery equipment; compressors, pumps, steam turbines, fans, blowers and other industrial rotating equipment
- Grasp of common reliability and maintenance practices; lubrication systems, vibration monitoring, equipment alignments, etc.
- Robust analytical and investigative skills (troubleshooting) to develop repair scopes and make sound recommendations for complex failures and events (Cause Mapping process)
- Confidence to make critical decisions independently and ownership to stand behind those decisions
- Experience with assessing failure probability using Risk Assessment and Prioritization based tools (RCM, FMEA, Risk Matrix, etc.)
- Computer savvy, with experience in Microsoft Office Applications (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- General understanding of Refining Operations
- Knowledge of typical rotating equipment components and design; understanding of engineered drawings, performance curves and specifications
- Intermediate working knowledge of SAP, including Maintenance Business Process and workflow

- Notifications, Work Orders, Purchase Orders
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards and recommended practices, including but not limited to API 610, 674, 617, 618, 611, 612, 682, etc.
- Static codes and standards regulating the Oil & Gas industry, including Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA), CSA B51, ASME Piping & Vessel Codes, API Inspection Codes, etc.
- High degree of activity – high stress when addressing significant incident and emergency activities
- Pressure from Cross Functional Teams to handle multiple competing priorities for support
- Approximate 40%/20%/40% office/shop/plant split
- Shift-work may be required during times of planned maintenance turnarounds (approx. every 2 years)
- Extended hours may be required when business requirements dictate
- Physically able to climb ladders, lift or carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and make visual inspections
- Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, and working in confined spaces as permitted
- While wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, incumbent will enter areas with chemical, physical, and biological hazards
