The Calgary Jewish Academy (CJA) has a proud legacy of over a century in shaping students who contribute to the future of Calgary, Canada, and beyond. Established in 1987 through the merger of the Calgary Hebrew School and the I.L. Peretz School (1927), CJA serves students from Nursery to Grade 9 in a safe, supportive, and challenging environment. The school fosters Jewish identity and community while delivering a rigorous dual curriculum that integrates the Alberta Curriculum with Judaic Studies.

Position Overview:

The Calgary Jewish Academy is looking to hire a Controller who is a highly motivated and qualified individual to run the Accounting function at the CJA who will take direction from the CEO. The primary responsibilities are:

• All operational accounting functions including bookkeeping, reporting and budgeting for both the school and daycare
• Responsible for the overall accuracy and reconciliation of accounting data;
• Providing executive team and directors with monthly reporting;
• Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements;
• Audit preparation and coordinating activities of external auditors
• Federal and provincial reporting requirements (i.e. charity returns)
• Providing all reporting to Alberta Education including the Alberta Education Independent Schools AFS reports and Daycare reporting
• Oversee the payroll and HR function
• Providing the CEO with information vital to the decision-making process;
• Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes;
• Identifying operational efficiencies and opportunities within the organization and making recommendations to the CEO
• Prepare, analyze and manage sensitive information and sensitive conversations as a result of working in a community school

Consideration will be given to those individuals who:

• Have knowledge of GAAP and principles of accounting as applied to not-for-profit practices;
• Good experience with QuickBooks Online
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical skills;
• Skills using Microsoft Excel and Word;

Schedule:

• Monday to Friday
• Days off include Jewish holidays
