Job Summary:
The Professional Practice Leader (PPL) for Occupational Therapy, Recreation Therapy, and Music Therapy is a driver and champion of interprofessional care and practice excellence across Trillium Health Partners. Leading practice excellence requires a strong foundation in professional practice, focused on engaging and empowering our health professions to deliver consistent high quality, safe patient- and family-centered care both within and beyond our walls.
Reporting to the Manager, Health Disciplines Practice, the Professional Practice Leader will:
- Work closely with individuals within the Occupational Therapy, Recreation Therapy, and Music Therapy teams ("the represented disciplines"), the PPL team and Clinical Programs to advance practice excellence
- Provide practice leadership for the represented disciplines and ensure practice is consistent with established standards of care, including those set forth by relevant Regulated Colleges and Associations
- Support Corporate, Professional Practice and Clinical Program initiatives
- Facilitate ongoing learning and professional development
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the development, monitoring and evaluation of standards of care for the represented disciplines
- Works with the disciplines, other PPLs, Clinical Educators, and Practice Consultants to develop strategies for integrated interprofessional care
- Understands, interprets and applies legislation, regulations and standards of practice to foster interprofessional evidence-based, best practice in the provision of safe, high quality, people-centered care
- Supports mentorship and models exemplary standards of practice, creating an environment that advances practice excellence
- Represents the disciplines organizationally as a corporate resource and interprets any changes that may impact practice for the disciplines (e.g. regulatory standards, changes to service delivery models, policies and procedures)
- In partnership with the Clinical Programs, facilitates peer engagement and integration into the practice environment through structured onboarding processes that enable new hires and those in new positions to build professional connections and adapt effectively to their role
- Establishes a communication framework within the professions, including regular discipline meetings and Discipline Practice Councils, to support best practices, foster professional collaboration, and monitor achievement of practice standards
- Supports and advances professional development within the disciplines by coordinating learning opportunities, fostering a supportive learning environment, and providing oversight to student placement coordinators to ensure a high-quality experience for all
- Provides advisory support to Clinical Managers in relation to discipline-specific practice inquiries (e.g. practice concerns, learning plans)
- Provides advisory support on issues related to regulatory compliance
- Contributes to the development of models of care and quality and safety initiatives in collaboration with Clinical Programs
- Promotes awareness of the disciplines and effectively communicates with leaders from Clinical Programs on issues relevant to the disciplines (e.g. scope of practice, role clarity, practice issues and trends)
- Supports the Interprofessional Advisory Council (IAC) and members to facilitate consistent interprofessional practice leading to the delivery of quality people-centred care
- Facilitates and supports quality improvement and scholarly activities within the professions, including the integration of evidence-informed practices, quality improvement initiatives, and knowledge translation strategies to advance clinical excellence and enhance professional practice
Qualifications:
- Registration and in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario required
- Minimum of 8 years experience in clinical practice
- Evidence of professional practice leadership skills and ongoing professional development
- Preceptor or teaching experience required
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills
- Fosters clinical best practice and evidence-based care
- Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation, regulatory standards of practice, evidence-based practice standards and scope of practice
- Demonstrated experience in advancing interprofessional collaborative practice
- Commitment to continuous learning and to participate in and support the learning of others
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize work, including managing multiple projects and the ability to adapt and adjust to changing priorities and timelines
- Effective engagement, facilitation and change management skills
- Proficiency in written, verbal and presentation skills
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with proven ability in problem solving and decision making
- Demonstrated work ethic, reliability, and positive attitude that demonstrates THP's values
