The Simulation Educator is responsible for the development, delivery, and evaluation of innovative simulation-based education and training programs that enhance staff skills, confidence, and readiness across all Lakeridge Health sites. This role strengthens interprofessional education, advances clinical competency, and supports system readiness, quality improvement, and the organization's commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism (IDEAA).
The Simulation Educator collaborates with program, corporate, and academic partners to ensure simulation-based education advances organizational preparedness, patient safety, and a culture of continuous learning aligned with Lakeridge Health's vision for One System, Best Health.
The Simulation Educator is both an educational leader and simulation practitioner, designing and facilitating high-quality learning experiences, mentoring faculty, and contributing to research and scholarship. The role requires a balance of educational expertise, clinical credibility, and technical familiarity with simulation technologies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Development & Delivery
" Lead the design, delivery, and evaluation of simulation-based programs that address identified learning needs, clinical competencies, and organizational priorities.
" Collaborate with academic partners and program leaders to integrate simulation into curriculum for medical staff and trainees, nursing, allied health, and continuing professional development.
" Ensure simulation activities align with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements and organizational policies.
" Conduct instructor-led certification and resuscitation programs (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc.) and coach learners in applying knowledge to clinical practice.
" Create and maintain a master schedule of simulation activities and oversee equitable access to simulation resources.
Health System Readiness
" Integrate simulation into hospital readiness activities, including emergency response, mass-casualty, outbreak management, and accreditation preparedness exercises.
" Collaborate with Emergency Preparedness, Quality, and Clinical Operations teams to identify system vulnerabilities and translate lessons learned into training initiatives.
" Support readiness planning for new clinical programs, models of care, or technologies through scenario-based testing and workflow evaluation.
Educational Leadership & Faculty Development
" Mentor, coach, and train faculty and preceptors in simulation pedagogy, scenario design, facilitation, and debriefing.
" Develop and deliver workshops on simulation methodology, fidelity, task trainer use, and adult learning principles.
" Provide consultations to programs and departments on integrating simulation into education, practice improvement, and system-level initiatives.
" Build a community of practice for simulation educators across the hospital and academic network.
Scenario Design & Technical Integration
" Design, program, and prepare simulation scenarios, including manikins, software, props, AV systems, and simulated clinical environments.
" Create facilitator/simulator guides with case progression, vital signs, diagnostic images, and learning objectives.
" Participate in simulations as facilitator, participant, or role player (e.g., nurse, physician, family member) to enhance realism.
" Work collaboratively with Simulation Specialist to ensure technical fidelity, troubleshooting, and operational efficiency.
Simulation Space Planning & Optimization
" Contribute to short- and long-term planning of simulation spaces, equipment, and digital learning technologies across sites to maximize accessibility and utilization.
" Provide input on layout, functionality, and ergonomic design of simulation areas to support inclusivity, learner engagement, and operational efficiency.
" Work with Facilities, IT, and LHEARN leadership to ensure simulation environments are adaptable for in-situ and virtual learning models.
Research, Scholarship & Quality Improvement
" Collect and evaluate program and simulation outcome metrics to assess impact on clinical practice and patient safety.
" Participate in and disseminate scholarly work (presentations, publications, research projects) in simulation-based education.
" Apply theories of knowledge translation and diffusion of innovation to embed best practices across the organization.
" Use learner and faculty feedback to continuously improve simulation programming.
" Collaborate with Quality & Patient Safety teams to design simulations that address critical incidents, near misses, or process gaps.
" Use simulation as a proactive tool to evaluate new policies, procedures, and clinical pathways prior to implementation.
" Collect and analyze performance data to measure the impact of simulation on clinical outcomes, patient experience, and staff confidence.
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism (IDEAA)
" Embed IDEAA principles into simulation design, case development, and facilitation to ensure equitable representation and cultural safety in all learning activities.
" Partner with Lakeridge Health's IDEAA and Indigenous Health teams to create scenarios addressing bias, discrimination, accessibility, and cultural humility.
" Ensure simulation environments and materials are physically, linguistically, and digitally accessible to all learners.
" Promote psychological safety and inclusion through trauma-informed facilitation practices.
Collaboration & Communication
" Serve as liaison between LHEARN, hospital programs, academic institutions, and external partners to support seamless learner experiences.
" Maintain strong communication with preceptors, professional practice leaders, Medical Affairs, IT, Occupational Health, IPAC, and other stakeholders.
" Support change management related to learner integration (communications, infrastructure, IT/badge access, stakeholder engagement).
Regulatory & Compliance
" Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies.
" Promote a safe and psychologically supportive learning environment, including confidentiality and respect in simulation.
Professional Development
" Maintain clinical and educational expertise by staying current with emerging simulation technologies, research, and best practices.
" Pursue professional development opportunities (e.g., simulation conferences, advanced faculty training).
" Role model commitment to lifelong learning, interprofessional collaboration, and the values of Inclusion, Compassion, Innovation, Teamwork, and Joy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
" Health Professional with current registration in good standing (e.g., RN, RT, MD, Paramedic, or equivalent).
" Degree in Education, Health Professions Education, Nursing, or a related field (minimum Bachelor's required, Master's preferred)
" Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) credential preferred.
" Current provider certification and/or instructor status in BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hire).
" Minimum 5 years of recent clinical experience in an acute care setting, with demonstrated teaching or preceptorship experience.
" Expertise in simulation pedagogy, adult learning, and program evaluation.
" Strong facilitation and debriefing skills (e.g., PEARLS, GAS, Advocacy-Inquiry).
" Familiarity with simulation technologies (manikins, task trainers, AV systems).
" Demonstrated understanding of the relationship between simulation, organizational readiness, and system resilience.
" Proven ability to integrate IDEAA principles into education and clinical practice.
" Experience contributing to space or infrastructure planning for simulation, education, or training facilities considered an asset.
" Strong commitment to continuous quality improvement, innovation, and the learner/patient experience.
" Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
" Demonstrated scholarship, research, or program development in healthcare education is an asset.
" Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital learning platforms.
" Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health's comprehensive safety programs and practices, including staff patient, and environmental safety, and participation in regular in-service education in this area; and
